But if the Pope goes through sex change operation during his papacy, does he get to change his name?

Maybe I should save that question for EWTN and call them during one of their shows, since they probably know more.

You can't any more. There used be a way, but after the website countmeout.ie managed to get 13,000 deconversions in a six month period in Ireland, they changed canon law.

For the rcc the number of apparent members is far more important than the number of actual members (because it'd probably dip below 100,000,000 if they did a proper count).

That sucks..in a way...although how the change in policy came about is both hilarious and also surely profoundly embarrassing for the church so there is that. Only less than 1 in 13 "Catholics" are..er...real Catholics? Seems unlikely to me...
