Which god is it okay to believe in, what with all the being nice to people that god believers are known for? 
I know, I know, it's a parody thread. Still it's one of those things that gets under my skin. Not god beliefs, lol. People believe in god. Nice or not good or bad, they will..but the mindless droning that we've been conditioned to put on as though peoples beliefs were somehow unconnected to their actions - or could be...well. That;s self serving garbage peddled by religions only after they've lost their grip on power. It's not basic human courtesy. Basic human courtesy would be to stand up to those beliefs and reject their acceptable assumption.... like so many other beliefs a person may like.
Being courteous to people sometimes means being discourteous or even downright violent with their beliefs. The assholes that we're being nice to have victims.
I try to be fair to victimizers, not nice. Fair can be very far removed from nice.

It does you injury, and has been doing the globe injury since before recorded history. Jefferson was a rehabiliting apologist as a politician....but it's not as if the definciencies of theistic belief were lost on him. He made that comment in criticism of those very beliefs. He saw what the beliefs we're discussing compelled people to do, or be.
LOL, we may never agree, so I'll just say it and be done with it. Theism.....is a problem. People imaging people as gods is a problem. That's just one of those "anythings"..that a certain number of people do believe in, that does make them assholes. We simply cannot believe anything we like...and..be nice to people. There are no free lunches.
The two beliefs are in necessary contradiction as the fundamental unit of warrant. In any conflict of interest, one or the other must be and will be privileged.

I'm wasting time right now.
I believe in many things that I can't prove. Some are just opinions about music, lit, and movies. Some are ideas about my professional work, intellectual interests, etc. that I would like to prove. ( I shouldn't need to add this but, damn you internet, by prove, I mean show to be falsifiable and convincingly likely. )
I believe it is possible to be a theist, a practitioner of critical thinking, and a nice person. I've seen it before. I currently have a colleague like that. Now, there are certain religions that would make it impossible if the person was to practice such religion to the letter. Yet holding simple believe in god while remaining skeptical of religious rhetoric is possible.
Why do that? Same reason I can listen to Songs in the Key of Life for the millionth time. It makes me feel good.
( BTW, What We Believe But Cannot Prove by John Brockman and the Edge Foundation makes for great, um, session reading )

Even if no children were indoctrinated, there would still be religion. There was no one to indoctrinate the first religious believer.
We invent them. Religion isn't really the problem, anyway. There are religions of nature, religious humanism, etc. Charitably, there's a wide set of religious beliefs that seem to cause no specific issue.
...then there's another set.
Beliefs like theism, substitutionary atonement, fatalism, and ethno-cultural supremacy. All of which are foundational to christian belief. A faithful christian could try to Be Nice™..but we would expect them to fail in specific contexts - and they do. Conflict between their beliefs and human interest. This is something that we all feel pressured by - but if we imagine two people exactly alike in all respects but one - one is an atheist..the other a faithful christian....the latter has exactly one more Good Reason to be shitty to other people.

Belief informs actions and the action people take based on their beliefs will affect change. Those changes will alter the rules of the game and that can have consequences that block you from doing what you need to do to get what you want from life. Life is a zero sum game.
