It generally works, because a cat that doesn’t have the wherewithal to mate has less motivation to spray, but about 10% newly neutered toms will carry on as before. It’s much more effective if they’re snipped prior to reaching breeding age.

I've had, I think, six toms who were fixed and continued to spray. I broke them of the habit.
