Health advocates do not condemn these gatherings as risky for COVID-19 transmission

Health advocates do not condemn these gatherings as risky for COVID-19 transmission
A group of health and medical colleagues has penned an open letter to express their concern that protests around the United States could be shut down under the guise of coronavirus health concerns.

The letter -- which went on to draw more than 1,200 signatures -- focuses on techniques to reduce harm to people protesting racial injustice.

"We created the letter in response to emerging narratives that seemed to malign demonstrations as risky for the public health because of Covid-19," according to the letter writers, many of whom are part of the University of Washington's Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"Instead, we wanted to present a narrative that prioritizes opposition to racism as vital to the public health, including the epidemic response. We believe that the way forward is not to suppress protests in the name of public health but to respond to protesters demands in the name of public health, thereby addressing multiple public health crises."

"However, as public health advocates, we do not condemn these gatherings as risky for COVID-19 transmission. We support them as vital to the national public health and to the threatened health specifically of Black people in the United States. We can show that support by facilitating safest protesting practices without detracting from demonstrators' ability to gather and demand change. This should not be confused with a permissive stance on all gatherings, particularly protests against stay-home orders." Those actions not only oppose public health interventions, but are also rooted in white nationalism and run contrary to respect for Black lives.

"Prepare for an increased number of infections in the days following a protest," the letter says. "Provide increased access to testing and care for people in the affected communities, especially when they or their family members put themselves at risk by attending protests."

A public health response to these demonstrations is also warranted, but this message must be wholly different from the response to white protesters resisting stay-home orders. Infectious disease and public health narratives adjacent to demonstrations against racism must be consciously anti-racist, and infectious disease experts must be clear and consistent in prioritizing an anti-racist message.

Your thread title is tragically misleading. The bit you pasted clearly says that protests ARE a health risk, but that the risk can be managed with best practices. The point of the letter is to argue AGAINST shutting down protests for health reasons. It also doesn’t mention the word ‘riot’.

How fucking stupid are you?

Ah... I didn't think there'd be a high value in this thread.

Yah, people protesting all over the place... Which brings large groups of people together... Which thence allows the renewed spread of the bug.

*Sigh*

Heards of people really are stupid.

My concern is that they are allowing this protest here in Australia.
After so much sacrifice to flatten the curve, not football or golf or swimming or even driving, countless bs fines given out, the swat team violently stopping lockdown protests, and all the damage that was done our state premier now says "they have a right to assemble, we won't stop them" like what total bullshit. No one can assemble but they can, its double standards.

And now what will happen when there is a spike in cases... Huge coronaphobia lockdowns again probs...
"No one can assemble" has to apply to everyone

RE: Health advocates do not condemn these gatherings as risky for COVID-19 transmission
You do realize there’s a difference between paraphrasing a text and misleading people about what it’s actually saying, right? And that the latter is against the rules, which Boru is well within his rights to enforce, since he is a mod, right? And that we’ve been over this issue when you spent an entire thread laughing at Greta Thunberg for basically repeating what medical experts have been saying about COVID for the past couple months and saying it’s a COVID expert giving an alternative opinion about the pandemic, when your own damn article said she was just an activist signal boosting the advice of actual experts, right?

And for your overuse of NPC memes, Agonstico, you are probably the one member of the boards who seems to fit the stereotype to a tee. You don’t seem to be able to think for yourself, just regurgitating the most moronic and/or hateful opinions you can without bothering to think about whether or not they actually fit or even make any fucking sense. If you did, you wouldn’t have spent the duration of a thread claiming people in favor of vaccines don’t trust them to be safe and therefore Want to make them mandatory like a mantra; if A) you had two brain cells to rub together, B) that idea crossed your mind at all and C) you actually thought about it for a Planck time, you would have rejected it as nonsense in a very literal sense of the term, because that’s exactly what it is. When called on your bullshit, the nature of the critique doesn’t even seem to penetrate your skill. You either latch onto an idea you can twist into your pre-existing worldview or you ignore it entirely, but evidently, to you, it seems like a vice when the left do it and a virtue when the right does it. And at least Online Biker and Drich occasionally Talk about their lives outside the forum. How rarely do you talk about how you’ve lived your life in Australia? For all we know, what little info you’ve given into the inner life of Agnostico could just be a bot regurgitating pre-programmed information like the spider’s egg story from Blade Runner:

Hell, the fact that you haven’t even bothered to pick an avatar, instead representing yourself as the forums’ default white figure of a man against a blue background helps contribute to the “you are what you hate” irony of your obsession with the NPC meme. And, by the way, for all your bitching about Australia’s lockdowns, you NEVER seem to react when I point out that Australia’s actually been slowly easing the lockdowns for the past couple weeks.

On the topic of the OP, given how much the medical experts have spent the past three months or so exhorting people to socially distance themselves and remain in quarantine, it’s honestly kind of brave of them to go out of their way to defend these protests. It’s a tricky tightrope to walk, since in both cases (COVID and police brutality) these are huge problems that cause a lot of potentially preventable deaths (especially to a disproportionally high number of black people). I’ve said before that at some point, we’re just going to have to find a way to balance slowing down the spread of COVID and just living our lives, and now, it looks like we’re finally doing that. And surprisingly, “protest against your people getting needlessly killed by police” wound up being one of the earliest issues.

Yes, they’re not condemning the protests, they’re supporting the protests and urging people to take proper precautions. If you’ll read what you pasted and make a valiant effort to understand it, the letter is saying that even though the protest increase the risk of a spike in COVID-19 cases, it’s important that the protests continue.

Now please answer my question: How fucking stupid are you?

However is just like but it negates its target phrase with a following:
“We support them as vital to the national public health and to the threatened health specifically of Black people in the United States.“

Ie. black people need better healthcare and racial equality so meet, its better for the country... the individualS however are screwed because of that inequality in healthcare so do shit about it.

Quote:We believe that the way forward is not to suppress protests in the name of public health but to respond to protesters demands i

What are protesters demanding. The cops have been charged.
Oh I forgot, "defund the cops", great idea. Less cops easier to do crime

Quote:in the name of public health, thereby addressing multiple public health crises

The only health crisis is the damage that all the rioting has already done and people who have died from it

Quote:However, as public health advocates, we do not condemn these gatherings as risky for COVID-19 transmission

But you very same public health advocates have been condemning and enforcing against all types of gatherings for the last 3 months now. Hypocrites
All forms of gatherings are deemed a danger but this protest is immune from covid, its fine

Quote:This should not be confused with a permissive stance on all gatherings, particularly protests against stay-home orders

You can go to this protest but not that one... Hypocrites. We have the right to assemble regardless of your virtue signalling ideological garbage

Quote:Those actions not only oppose public health interventions, but are also rooted in white nationalism and run contrary to respect for Black lives.

What... LoL i can only laugh. So all gatherings are now "rooted in white nationalism". Even if it is a gathering of Mexicans
And run "contrary to respect for black lives". A person socializing with friends has absolutely nothing to do with any of that racist liberal crap

Quote:Prepare for an increased number of infections in the days following a protest

Well if going for a drive in my car was going to "kill a granny" this protest is going to kill millions
And let me guess... Lockdown again... LoL... Second wave...

Quote:A public health response to these demonstrations is also warranted, but this message must be wholly different from the response to white protesters resisting stay-home orders

Firstly, there was people of all races at those lockdown protests. And again the hypocrisy.
Condemn the peaceful protest and encourage the violent ANTIFA riot.
LoL the left in America is so ideologically fucked. No shame in lying, no shame in double standards, no shame in open hypocrisy

Quote:infectious disease experts must be clear and consistent in prioritizing an anti-racist message.

Like I said, no shame at all. Medical experts are now doing a 180 and prioritizing something else over covid

KILL SOME GRANNIES... HYPOCRISY AND DOUBLE STANDARDS

The most stupid part is still to come... People either justifying the hypocrisy or denying it...
Allow one public gathering and you can allow the rest
