Cops can do more harm than good, but I don't believe that police brutality is pervasive. The number of police vs incidents of brutality don't bear that out.  Sure we need to work to end police brutality. Let's go for it, but we must not destroy an essential institution In the process.

It depends on what colour you are as to whether police brutality is pervasive.

Some black people in the US have stopped calling the police because it mostly does more harm than good.

You're all pointing out instances of corruption by police officers and then making the assumption that the police system is corrupt.  So I'll make some judgments based on your line of reasoning.  All blacks are bad because some of them murder people.  All whites are bad because some of them murder people.  All priests, teachers and scout leaders are bad because some of them molest children.  We could all point out plenty of instances to back up our assumptions.  What are your assumptions based on?  Have you seen results of investigations into a fair sample of police forces that revealed that these forces were pervasively corrupt?  If you just think they are I accept that, but that doesn't prove anything except you think it's so.

The idea that most cops stand by and let bad cops do their thing without reporting bad behavior is not a particularly controversial statement. It's definitely not rare either. It's the norm. Go ask your local police about it, I'm sure they won't be shy to admit that the "blue wall of silence" is a very real thing. Not to mention countless former officers who acknowledge its existence in every major US city. Fuck man, haven't you ever seen Serpico? I thought this shit was common knowledge. Maybe it's because I have firemen and police officers in my extended family that I take this knowledge for granted? I don't have the time to collect all the data for you. Not to mention the problems with police unions, like stipulations in contracts that say every 5 years a cop's record must be wiped (NYPD), or that when a cop gets fired for being a bad cop he's welcomed at another police department down the road... I mean, this stuff is readily available for you to find on your own, Lek.

The Catholic church suffers huge institutional issues and covered for child molesters

After many complaints from fed up residents and a killing, they're sending the police back in, which is what should have been done in the first place. I think the mayor has arrived at an epiphany that it's not the "summer of love" again.

As far as the corruption question goes, I can't find a credible investigation that concluded that the entire police institution is corrupt; or even most of it. Have you?
