I imagine it would look like it was moving straight down until it met atmospheric resistance and slowed.

PolyMath257 has it right. What literature have you read that contradicts that? This is basic orbital mechanics.

To throw it downwards, you would have to throw it incredibly fast, for it to enter the atmosphere.
It would be much better to throw it backwards, but you would still need to throw it over 100 m/s to change its orbit enough for it to enter the atmosphere.
