I got a Stimulus check.

The $1,200.00 amount is to be paid to individuals who made up to $75K and couples filing jointly will get $2,400.00 (2*1200) up to $150K.  The income is based on the adjusted gross income on your tax filing from 2018 if your 2019 wasn't done in time. After those income thresholds are met the amount of the stimulus check will be reduced incrementally for amounts over those stated above.  Once an individual hits $99K and a couple $198K there is no payment to be made. There were also $500.00 payments sent for dependent children.

The first stimulus check is NOT considered taxable income.

They are still hammering out the details of a possible second check but the details will probably be similar.  Different amounts paid and perhaps different income levels as a cutoff.

Since the stimulus check isn’t taxable income, you’ve taken away something for Brian to fret about.

How can you be so cruel?

RE: I got a Stimulus check.
I used mine against my debt. Glad to hear I won't have to pay taxes on that extra income, but I'm still ahead even if I did.

I hear the second check will have a lower income threshold, so if it finally comes out I might not get one this time; but fortunately my work has remained steady.

The IRS doesn't have the resources to get into the nitty gritty of who needs it the most, or it would take them a lot longer if they did, and delaying an economic stimulus in an economic crisis is a problem in itself.

It's a gift.

No, it is a bribe.

If America had been paying livable wages for the past 40 years and had been more concerned about saving for a rainy day for things like this pandemic, we wouldn't be in the position to having to do this.  Obama set up a pandemic response team and Trump dismantled it.

There most certainly are people in the middle/working and poor classes who need this now. I don't need it.

We are in this position of having to do this because for the past 40 years the GOP has been more concerned with protecting the tax codes that protect the likes of Jeff Bezos and the Walmart family.

Nothing is a "gift" when it comes to taxes. Unfortunately, while the stimulus is needed now, because of 40 years of Reagan's failed trickle down economics, this will add to our long term debt.

Your comprehension is truly lacking.

My answer had nothing to do with the damn stimulus check.

Go back and read all the words in what Boru posted to me.  He asked me a question and I answered that question.

But that is not why Trump or the GOP did what they did. I can remember Bush Jr doing the same thing. My X and I got a 300 dollar check. My point is it shouldn't get to this point.

Who is this really benefiting long term? It makes the struggling feel good short term, sure. But how is this going to stop a future condition ending up in the same result?

The key isn't to chase low wages, tax breaks for the rich long term. The key is to pay livable wages, and tax wealth so that when a rainy day comes, like now, far fewer people get hurt.

The GOP's tactic is "let the rich do whatever they want" then when the market crashes, they throw crumbs at the rest of society. And that is only a bandaid creating a false sense of security.

Most of the people I know used it to stimulate the economy, that's where it got the name. It not only helped the individual but also the businesses where the money was spent.  Did you want the government to wait and review everybody's income and lost income due to Covid before they issued assistance?

You're so funny and wrong. The virus would have hurt the US economy no matter which party was in charge. This was voted on by dems and pubs. No argument that the virus impact is more than likely worse under Trump and the pub controlled senate.

This "we're good, they're bad" position will not solve any issues in the long run.

You, "Did you want the government to wait and review"....

Me, "No!" My point has always been it shouldn't have gotten to this point in the first place.

It isn't enough to react after the fact. What is America going to do to prevent it getting to this point in the future? THAT is the real question. The global economy for that matter focuses far too much on short term profits and exploitation.

Bailing out the middle class and working poor IS needed now. But the long term picture is always going to be how do we avoid getting into this situation in the first  place.

How does the US prevent a previously unknown virus pandemic?

How do you prevent people from having to isolate to slow the virus spread an loose their jobs and income?

We know that even when people have good jobs they don't always save a nest egg to fall back on, especially one that will cover months or years. Does the government step in and force people to save?

You're a whiny idiot.

Um no, I simply didn't want it to get to this point. It is too late now, so I understand there isn't time to determine.

It still makes no sense to send me money I don't need. "Nuance" matters.

If the GOP hadn't put giant corporations and tax breaks for billionaires before livable wages and saving for a rainy day, America wouldn't have been in the position of rushing.

The purpose of the "stimulus check" was to stimulate the economy.  Are you really this dense?

If you had over a certain amount of taxable income you wouldn't have received the whole amount.

If this is stressing you so damn much, don't cash the damn thing.

Move on...only you would have a damn mental breakdown over receiving money that you don't need.  Why don't you try being thankful that you don't need it.

RE: I got a Stimulus check.
Funny thing.  The stimulus check shows that tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy doesn't stimulate the economy, as the trickle downers would have us think.  Putting money in the hands of consumers does.  And they know it.  That's a healthy step.
