Well, Last Podcast on the Left can help a long way towards that. They have several series on cults: their series on Aum Shinrikyo, the Children of God, Jonestown, and Heaven's Gate dwell quite a bit on the subject of how cult members end up becoming recruited (usually by recruiting vulnerable people and giving them something they don't have) and why many of them stay in, even as their beliefs get more and more insane (hint: it rhymes with dunk lost galaxy). They also have episodes on Manson, Scientology, Order of the Solar Temple, and Mormonism, though I haven't listened to those series in donkeys and don't remember if they dwell as much on the how and why in those cases.

While it's true he wasn't apparently saying first aid and was carrying a kit . There every indication he was simply using that as an excuse to wade into the crowd and intimidate them

It is NOT self defense when you illegally cross state lines, underage, using a firearm you have no legal right to use. But even IF you were of age, what makes any civilian think it is there duty to play Rambo? Trevor Noah got it right, this kid wanted to hunt, he wanted to play Rambo.

And he got more consideration AFTER shooting 3 people and killing two of them, AND made it into custody a day later without injury.

And if he wanted to play Rambo IRL, couldn’t he have at least taken the effort to identify actual criminals in his own area and tried out his skills on them? I understand that it might take a supreme amount of effort to find someone worthy, like a drug lord or a child pornographer, and maybe honest-to-Jah criminal gangs aren’t easy to come by an Antioch, but come on! At least Rambo tries to limit his killing to the bad guys (or people personally threatening him like in the first movie,) people the average person wouldn’t mourn.
