*Which by all accounts I've read is simply a not very good film which garbles an important message.

Sexualization of children is a thing. A film ABOUT the sexualization of children is nothing to get in a twist over.

We’ve all seen films with rape, torture, murder and abuse as the subject matter. How is this different?

Tangentially, I’d be willing to wager that if the Obamas hadn’t signed a development deal with Netflix, people on the right wouldn’t give two shits about ‘Cuties’.

I agree.

Kids dressing and acting like women makes me uncomfortable for several reasons.  It looks like their mothers are trying to live through them.  There are pervs that get off on it.  The kid is not being a kid and is being taught to attract the kind of attention she may not want.  The culture that does this gave us JonBenet Ramsey and Honey Boo Boo.

All the same Little Miss Sunshine is hilarious.  Cruz probably got a boner watching that too.

An article from "The Rolling Stones" spoke about a different -and more believable- cause for the fuss:

https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/cul...a-1057736/

Quote:Accusations of pedophilia are “not new,” says Angelo Carusone, president and CEO of Media Matters for America, a nonprofit watchdog organization focused on right-wing media. The tactic has an extensive history that traces all the way back to medieval anti-Semitic allegations of blood libel to the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, in which parents en masse accused day care centers and teachers of engaging in ritualized Satanic sexual abuse. “It happens oftentimes when there’s a lot of sweeping change happening in society,” says Carusone, drawing parallels to the tumult of the Reagan years as having set the stage for the Satanic panic.
...
The tragic irony is that in focusing so heavily on Cuties and other accused purveyors of child sexual exploitation, those on the right have virtually ignored the actual harm being done to children in their own homes

In other words; the far-right just launched its arrow against the Left, Biden, the Democrats. Netflix supporting pedophilia is nothing but the "used justification"; ironically reversing the arrow the Left shot at the Right once upon a time concerning "child molesting in Churches".

The American elections are so close, that's why Trump launched some arrows to give him a boost; one arrow is the funny peace between the UAE and Israel, another is this 'cuties' nonsense, other arrows will be launched too as we near the elections.

Why didn't the hypocrite Trump speak earlier about other movies that were filled with pedophilia-implicit-pointing like "Leon: The Professional" ?

Quote:You may want to argue that the sexualization of a child wasn’t the intention of the film, but based on the international version, deleted movie scenes, and the original script, it becomes clear that it was definitely intentional. In the international version of the film, there are many more scenes in which you can see the sexual tension between the two characters. The reason for cutting scenes from the American version was because of the bad response certain scenes got from viewers.

So don't you ever fall for the propaganda of Trump. Deflect his arrows, he only wants to stay in presidency for life.

Of course, it's worth noting that the poster might have helped in the controversy:

The image on the left is the first Netflix poster. And the one on the right is the original French version. So, unless Netflix is intentionally trying to create controversy, there is no excuse.

Okay, having finally watched it on Netflix, it turns out there's a lot less focus on the creepy pedophilia shit than a lot of the controversy would have you believe. The twerking, for instance, only comes in a bit more than halfway through the movie. There's no nudity, and several of the cringiest scenes actually show significant disapproval of what's going on. The infamous dance scene near the end, the audience is actually booing many of the most explicitly sexual moves, heavily implying that even if Amy didn't have her sudden attack of conscience, they probably wouldn't have done so well. There's also another scene where Amy made the stupefying decision to lock herself in the bathroom, take a picture of her vagina on what I think is Instagram (thankfully, we don't see anything, which is more than I can say of some other French films). In this case, THE ENTIRE REST OF THE CAST, calls her out on her idiotic decision, and even the Cuties expel her, at least until the dance scene at the end. The movie pretty clearly does not approve of the creepily sexualised dancing, and, even when it's her strictly Islamic family punishing her, well, in this case, they actually have a point. And now, I wish I could find the final scene where Amy's playing Jump Rope with some other kids, and, as the camera slowly pans up, she keeps meeting it to show that she's smiling, far happier than she ever was in her Muslim community or the Cuties, because, as heavy-handed as it might be, it really helps keep things in a proper perspective.

It's worth noting that the director spent 18 months researching studies on how preteens are being exposed to adult content on social media, and that she went out of her way to explain this to the girls' parents, and ultimately, she explained the big theme of the film like this: "Our girls see that the more a woman is overly sexualized on social media, the more she's successful. And the children just imitate what they see, trying to achieve the same result without understanding the meaning, and yeah, it's dangerous."

And for a sobering look on how this phoenomenon's affected another country, see this The Right Opinion video:

In conclusion, Thank Jah this movie wasn't made in Brazil, because it'd probably actually be that bad if it was.

Well, since my previous post has apparently gotten some attention, since Nay Sayer has apparently decided to kudo it last night, I figure I may as well share some more on the controversy. Like the fact that, according to the director, "Furthermore, there was always a psychologist present, she was there before the shoot, during the shoot, and even after the shoot, to constantly communicate with the girls, and to avoid any risk of confusion with the cinematic roles they were playing and their real lives as children. And I can tell you they did not suffer any confusion and they are now the spokespeople of the message of this film with their peers."

And, in another statement, she said that: “We also worked with a child psychologist throughout the filming. She’s still working with the children, because I want to make sure that they can navigate this newfound stardom.” On the off chance anyone thinks there might be a contradiction between these two statements (that they apparently went through the making of the film psychologically unscathed, but are still seeing the psychologist), remember that suddenly being thrust into stardom, especially as a child, can be a psychological minefield without the proper support. Even if you remain successful into adulthood, you could end up like this:

And while I was looking for more information on this child psychologist, I found two reviews from survivors of childhood sexual abuse; they actually both gave the movie positive reviews:

From reading this thread, it sounds like a movie young women should watch. It doesn't really sound like it's made for pervs.

Once you get past the premise and the fact that it occasionally skirts Euroschlock territory it really is something young women should watch. "Don't be in too big a hurry to grow up, and for fuck's sake, be responsible about sex, because there's a time and a place for sex and 'pre- or barely pubescent' ain't it" is a lesson young girls should really learn. That and maybe "if you're feeling stifled by your parents' extremely oppressive lifestyle, going to the opposite extreme is likely not the way to go."
