The pope has a tremendous role in governing the Church and the Holy See. The Curia and the Secretariat are both answerable to the pontiff, but he is not answerable to them. He can unilaterally make changes to Church administration, alter the budget to suit himself...he can even raise an army if it suits him to do so. He can ordain/elevate anyone he wants to, and defrock any member of the clergy on a whim.

The pope has extremely wide (though not unlimited) powers of governance within the Church. It’s not a stretch to think of him as a prime minister with a rubber stamp parliament.

You could think of it that way, but you could think of the head of the coe that way as well. In reality, the queen and the pope are the rubber stamps - though I doubt that either of them spends much (if any) of their time fulfilling that role. The job, in both cases, has been transformed into a pr gig.

The Church of England failed to protect children from sexual abuse, and created a culture where abusers "could hide", a report has concluded.
The Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse (IICSA)'s report says the Church's failure to respond consistently to victims and survivors of abuse often added to their trauma.
It added that alleged perpetrators were often given more support than victims.
The Church of England is expected to publish a response later.

The report, which is the latest in a series of publications from the IICSA, says 390 clergy members and other church leaders were convicted of abuse between the 1940s and 2018.

In 2018 there were 2,504 safeguarding concerns reported to dioceses about either children or vulnerable adults, and 449 allegations of recent child sexual abuse.
The inquiry said the Church of England was "in direct conflict with its own underlying moral purpose to provide care and love for the innocent and the vulnerable".
Its chair, Prof Alexis Jay, said: "Over many decades, the Church of England failed to protect children and young people from sexual abusers, instead facilitating a culture where perpetrators could hide and victims faced barriers to disclosure that many could not overcome.

i hate stupid crap like this... where is the expectation that God protects all come from? certainly not the bible. we are told God did not spare his son from the evils of this world and as followers we should not expect to be treated any differently. retards... this world belongs to satan. if you oppose him like by going to church, he is at war with you. he will use everything in his power to get you to turn on the church and what little protection there is from the onslaught satan can levie. None of this changes when you follow Christ we are still slaves to sin. we are simply forgiven. it is that honest way we look at ourselves with the humility to say i can not do better that forces people to the church. why is it even a thing when one or many of us fail? it is you who pretend to be good enough with out God it should be you atheist who are put on front page news when your sins are known. we do not pretend to be better, by defination we have to admit we all fall short and need redemption!

If churches were full of people convinced that they couldn't possibly do better...that might explain why they're also full of sexual predators.

I'm good enough not to molest children. Seems to me like I can do better, even if you're convinced that you can't.

It’s nothing to do with God, so untwist your knickers. It’s about the C of E not only failing to protect children from abusers, but opting instead to protect the abusers themselves.

You consider exposing child abusers to the light of day to be ‘stupid crap’? Da fuq is wrong with you?

Drich's sense of "morality" has more to do with control and power via authority than anything else.

I have a hypothesis that Drich is actually a Loki troll (basically someone playing Devil's Advocate, an old term from TalkOrigins), in actuality an anti-theist, which is using sophistry, ad homs, ... and the whole rulebook in logical fallacies in tempering atheist rhetoric.

Where did I say I expected god to protect anyone?
I am pointing out that that the church if more interested in protecting it's pervert priests than in protecting children.

I cant speak from experience but i'm sure all sexual sin pretty much works the same way. sex is like a drug, and what ever your personal drug of choice is, once you become addicted to that flavor it has you. it would be no different if you were exposed to hertosexual sex at a younger age and had yourself a little girlfriend who was into it too. you can rationalize it you can not hardly control it. or if you could i'm sure as many homosexuals point out why would they openly chose a lifestyle that splits their families and ruins careers and lives. or the man who cheats on his wife.. when he has become addicted to the whole adventure of cheating or even the man addicted to porn.. it is all sexual sin, society just so happens to draw a line and forms a specific boundary around one specific sexual sin because most of us do not have or has to feed the addiction with under age peope. but in truth the sin is the same to god. That is why in the NT there is no difference between the word homosexuality and pedophile (why they are not specifically/separately identified) as they identified in the greater sexual sin.) So why I'm sure you and the rest of us have no issue with pedophilia those in the church see our sexual sin as being to God no different that our own sins of choice. After all we set the limits on sex in this society
not God. God never says 18 before sex. so why should he care if to us it qualifies as pedophilia, when his standard demand a sanctified marriage.

so when an actor or some celbrity gets caught diddling some kid, does the screen actors guild have to make things right? do other actors get boy cotted or shat on by soceity for the actions of another man? can you not see this doubble standard with in the church?
