I've noticed that we've had considerably less road kill this year. Usually I have to dispatch at least one a year that's been hit.

Around here roadkills are way up..we have 4 dead in the ditches next to the road on our property.( 5/8 mile)..

I seem to recall that roadkill could be taken if one had a license for the animal. Maybe the asshole getting run through the head kind of taints the meat?

Depends on the state. If you hit the deer in some states the cops can write out a permission slip to keep it (for the processors) while other states take the corpse and donate it to a food bank. Best talk to someone who knows the laws in your area.

Here in Michigan - it is now legal to pick up a road killed deer. (Only deer.... I dunno why you can't take an opossum or a raccoon...) It used to require a "roadkill permit" from a law enforcement officer.  No longer.

Rule of thumb with roadkill - one side is usually untouched. You can usually get the backstraps and one rear haunch. The gut is usually a mess. 

The other consideration is how long it had been laying. In cold weather - if it is still warm you are good to go.if bloated - it's coyote bait.

Best recovery method is usually caping the back - taking off the backstraps and good rear haunches. More wasteful than gutting and standard butchering - but less wasteful than leaving it to the crows.

We get donated roadkill for our canids at the Endangered Wolf Center. Fun to watch a pack of African Painted Wolves make a buck disappear in ten minutes, hooves and horns left for toys.

Whacked 2 little does this morning. 1 heart shot. 1 head shot. Both 90 yards with a .450. Both DRT. Neither ran a foot.

Freezer is going to be full - and got all racks filled in smokehouse.
