were not protesters - but poorly armed terrorists?

Terrorists, rioters, insurgents ............... pick your own definition. Why do you think I agree with the armed individuals in Portland?

OLB does a lot of stereotyping. I suspect he gathered your opinions of protesters and my opinion of protesters out of thin air.

One thing to note: I’ve mentioned before that the big reason America has failed so consistently in wars in the past couple decades is because we’ve tended to pick our fights with guerrilla-style forces without centralized leadership, in situations where everyone and their mums could be members. The only exception was the first Gulf War, and that was the only time since 1945 that we actually fought a proper army.

This could be yet another example, terrifyingly close to home, but, then again, with cases like Al Qaeda, ISIS, and the Viet Cong, there was one key caveat: in those cases, the guerrillas wound up being so effective because they wound up becoming seen as the lesser evil among the population. And if the fuckers doing this pass that threshold, we’re fucked and nothing short of genocide is going to stop it. Of course, if the past few years are any indication, that ain’t happening. What is happening is the people are seeing more and more how ugly their ideology and what they’re fighting for really are, support is dropping precipitously, and the remaining supporters are getting radicalized. With this scenario, what I’m suspecting is that this shit is going to keep happening for a few years and then Peter out. I’m not sure if this is going to constitute a second civil war, but I know they sure as shit want it to.

I sure hope that you are correct. Also, the population is homogeneous enough even on a state-wise basis that a civil war is pretty much out of the question. My chump-supporting neighbors may have signs (STILL!?) in their front yards, but I don't expect them to go marching in brigades in the streets.

Violent uprisings and revolutions are acceptable to Americans when they happen thousands of miles away from our borders.  It will be interesting to see how the people change their views when it's going on in their back yard.

I know a lot of gun guys, by which I mean people who own lots of guns and tons of ammo, show photos of said armaments to everyone they meet and complain incessantly about how oppressed they are. These people often talk of how the government will have to take their guns from their dead hands and spout the motto Molon labe (come and take them). I have always laughed at this because it demonstrates a profound lack of understanding on the legal status of firearms and the opinions of left leaning politicians, not to mention the majority of Americans. I say all this because it is just one of the many "oppressions" claimed by the Trumpists.

As an disclaimer, I am a gun owner but I'm not a "gun guy". I have no photos of my guns and see absolutely no chance that they will be taken from me by the "government". Despite my gun ownership, I cannot relate to these gun guys.
Why is it so?

In the early 1970s I visited Lima, Peru, at the taxpayer's expense. As I rode a taxi through the town I noticed military vehicles parked in the middle of major intersections, mostly tanks and AFVs. I asked the driver about this and replied "Election soon" in a blasé manner. It was business as usual there.

I don't think this will ever become "business as usual" for the US, we have our political crazy season but then things go back to "FFS, move on!"

No pictures of your guns?

That's dumb.

I have pictures of ALL my guns - annotated with make/model and serial number - in my safe deposit box - for insurance purposes.

If stolen or my house burns down - I am covered.

Because they didn't murder or intimidate anyone with those items so it wasn't news, I would think.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.
