As 37 points out, there are more than 500 000 deaths in the US. Bear in mind - that’s WITH most people voluntarily staying home when they can, wearing masks when they can’t and not crowding together. Add to that the mandates limiting public gatherings, the closures of schools and entertainment venues, and the cancellations of large. Without all this, your death toll would be MUCH higher.

New Zealand has a pretty strict lockdown policy. Know how many people we’ve lost to COVID? 26.

I'm in a state that isn't on lockdown and I eat out and go do whatever the hell I want. Might be kinda silly but that's just me. I can't wait to go to the movies again.

Any idea how many people you’ve infected?

RE: Are lockdowns justified?
1) Well, here's one attempt at figuring out how effective "lockdowns" are, judging US states against each other in terms of what limits they take early on and what restrictions they lift later on. It's pretty clear from the data that the states that took the swiftest action the earliest on ended up doing better.

2) Yes, lockdowns have their side effects; but when the choices are a couple thousand developing mental problems and letting the virus run wild and infect most of the population and killing millions (at the moment, according to the latest figures, 2% of all people to develop COVID have died of it, and that's going to be lead to the deaths of a bit less than 6 million in the US alone), the vast majority of governments know what option to take. And as for the economy, well, Brazil took a very laissez-faire attitude towards the virus, and how did that effect the economy? Very poorly. And, yes, there have been pandemics that have been over-hyped to seem worse than they actually were (like, say, the Swine Flu fiasco from the 1970s or the H1N1 pandemic in 2009). This ain't one of them.

3) And as we all know, there's no way to take Vitamin D outside of sunlight. It's not like there's dozens of vitamin supplement makers who manufacture pills that can give people all the Vitamin D they need and then some.

4) No, they're not. As far as I can tell, the only nation that actually had laws against lockdowns prior to the pandemic is Sweden. And it turns out that when the time came to evaluate its effects, it wound up leaving a lot to be desired.

5) If the governments mix their messages and act counter to the best medical practices, that's their problem.

You cannot take one day, or one week in as a cure regardless of county, nation or the entire planet. To defeat a pandemic, it isn't a matter of ups and downs in one location, but global cooperation.

California is on lockdown and has more cases than Texas, Texas lifted the mask mandate and is doing better than the state on lockdown, not sure what it's accomplishing...maybe we all should just allow it and have herd immunity. I doubt there would be that many deaths.

You come across as a young selfish teen.

A leader must make a judgment about inconveniencing 100-X% to save X%.  There is a moral threshold, and in every country in the world, COVID19 met the threshold for imposing restrictions.

We know that Texas is now restriction-free.  Perhaps some others are too.  From a scientific viewpoint, this is too early.  You are encouraging a new wave of virus variants that could haunt the population (and the world) for a longer time.

Texas needed a distraction for the disastrous power shortage, so they gave people bread and circuses.

It is also more densely populated, and just because the state advocates rules, does not mean all citizens follow them.

Which is why "lockdown" is a bullshit word for any state, red or blue. If you tell most people to wear their seatbelt today, most will. But back in the 70s most adults fought that concept.
