What is Bilble?

But the Bible is one of the oldest collections of written fairytales we have.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

This is the contradiction at the heart of Christianity.  There is the meek and mild Jesus preaching tolerance, as well as the Jesus teaching fire and brimstone.

If it is true that all who don't believe that Jesus is Lord will get burned for eternity, and the faithful will live forever, then what value does life have?  I would argue, none.  A finite life is meaningless compared to an infinite afterlife.  All manners of things are justified in order to minimize the chance of people getting tempted by Satan and the unbelievers.

What I don't understand is, since the Christians believed that unbelievers would be burned for an eternity ANYWAY (for the crime of unbelieving). Why did Christians feel the need to burn people at the stake? All they really did, according to their own theory, is add a couple of minutes to the burning time. What the fuck good is that going to do?

It's as if they thought "This burning for eternity shit is a load. So we better ACTUALLY burn people alive so they will fear actual burning and be coerced into thinking the way we do."

They were protecting other people. Sin and witchcraft were thought of like miasma or disease. Same with the poly blend thing. Sure, they thought that their race and culture were superior, but to make sure there was no fraternizing and miscegination, they engaged in a series of seemingly idiotic prohibitions that would have made it difficult to cross ethnic barriers even in ones own neighborhood. Other people as miasma and disease, again.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

The bible IS NOT the oldest organized language in writing in human history. Cuneiform writing is.

And while the bible does mention real places and real people, it does not make the super natural real or magic real. The places and people mentioned were part of motifs added to the mythology after the fact to lend a false sense of credibility.

It is like adding New York City into a Superman movie knowing New York existed long before someone created Superman.

The supernatural elements are motifs, Brian, not the geography. Both new and old magic book are stories that offer a supernatural explanation for worldly failure and tragedy. God was angry at the isrealites and the judahites - that's why they got rolled from every side. Jesus didn't really fail to establish the promised davidic kingdom...he conquered death and became a god.

It's the spelling - If you are going to title a thread the least you can do is try to spell it correctly.

Though I sort of like the the billblee sound.

Yes, the super natural are motifs, we accept that now, or at least the sane do. But back then, most people bought that as real reality.

The idea of the "afterlife" is the idea that death is not forever, and you move on to a new life after you die, so in that context Christianity is not the first religion, or the only religion that buys the idea of surviving death. The only thing the Jesus story adds to surviving death, is being above mere mortals and having super natural powers.

And I wasn't claming the supernatural was the geography. I was saying back then, the writers of holy writings peppered real places and real people into the writings to lend the false apperance of credibility.

This is the case with all of antquity. You can find legends and myths all over the world, that convey gods/s and kings, and ruling families combined with the mythology of the super natural peppered with real people and real places.

China, Japan, Rome, Greece, Myans, Egyptians all of them have their concepts of afterlife in ancient mythology.

Jesus is simply another mythology in human history trying to convey the desire for our species to continue on after death.

Hindus and Buddhists too, have the concept  of reincarnation, which is also an attempt by humans to claim there is life after death.

Yes, I know that's what you were saying, I'm suggesting that you've got that wrong.

Isaiah, for example, doesn't pepper in real places or people or events to lend the false appearance of credibility.  The real places people and events were there, exile was on the horizon. That's why it was credible. The prophets of the ot were writing social and political commentary as believers - not engaging in some vast conspiracy to fool a reader hundreds of years into the future.
