Weird, right? We don't think of it. We can trace the introduction of marijauna to the ane in any meaningful way...to the joseon dynasty, 1392. There was minor infiltration beforehand - but then it became a flood. The two historically, culturally, and economically relevant strains (to drug use, anyway) are from se asia and c america. People pre contact with either of these two regions and their respective periods never knew it existed.

They're like potatoes. Unknown, irrelevant, and then indispensible. Some anthropologists (and interested civvies like me) credit the presence or absence of the drug to the presence or absence of chill in native religions. A presence for living.
Carl Sagan, in contemporary times, would offer similar insight. That it was both strange and instructive when a culture would demonize a chemical that produced the lifeblood of civilized experience.
