Frankly, from what I’ve been able to gather about his views (which I’ve decided to call “crazy-wing”, because, frankly, they’re batshit in a way that transcends the political spectrum), throwing people who don’t quite fit in his ideal view of the world under the bus seems to be his default way of dealing with any problems his ideas create.

I applaud your empathy and concern for others but your understanding of economics leaves something to be desired.
Businesses need to make money to be viable. They can't do that if they pay the employees a wage higher than the worth of an employee's work.
If someone is doing work for money then they should at least be able to live off the wages. Otherwise there is no point in working.
If the business model means that they cant afford to pay a living wage then that business should fail. That's market forces for you.

I think it bears saying that many (if not most) misanthropes love mankind dearly. I think there's a Charles Schultz quote or something about that. (I love mankind, but I can't stand people-- something like that.)
But when you love something dearly, you tend to notice whatever is fucking with its happiness the most. What is fucking with the happiness of humankind the most?
People.
Therefore, misanthropy is justified for anyone who loves humankind.
