You are less chilled by a nearsighted chap with a derringer?
Or a guy in a monster truck who wants to see what it' s like to run over somebody?
I fail to see what is terrifying about good marksmanship.
Personally - the idea of somebody blowing my brains out while I am unaware is oddly comforting.
Death is certain. Getting that way without any forewarning seems better than sitting around stressing out about it.
So chill, relax, and quit moving around so much....

I guess I'm just not as fatalistic as you are.
If someone is standing in front of me with a gun, I can - and have done - something about it. Granted, these weren't professional (or even particularly skilled) people. Bit of advice - if someone doesn't want a broken arm, they shouldn't wave guns in my face.

Boru No get what you mean. The idea of being picked off from miles away without even seeing your killer is kind of scary. There is a reason they were used in psychological warfare
Quote:Due to the surprise nature of sniper fire, high lethality of aimed shots and frustration at the inability to locate and counterattack snipers, sniper tactics have a significant negative effect on morale. Extensive use of sniper tactics can be used to induce constant stress and fear in opposing forces, making them afraid to move about or leave cover. In many ways, the psychological impact imposed by snipers is quite similar to those of landmines, booby-traps, and IEDs (constant threat, high "per event" lethality, inability to strike back).[68][69][70]

Just look up "the white death" during WW2.
The Russians feared the man.

Boru Unless you know the person is completely inept with a firearm or you move in excess of 1200 feet per second - trying to disarm someone with a gun is an incredibly stupid way of getting yourself shot.....

Two questions:
1. Who said I was smart?
2. Why would I have to move faster than 1200fps?
Anyroad, it worked both times it’s happened. I probably wouldn’t ever attempt it again, though.

1200 fps is the speed of a typical pistol bullet.

But I’m not trying to dodge a bullet, I’m trying to move faster than a person holding a gun. I agree, though, that if he gets a shot off before I can get to his gun, I’m very likely fucked.

You must have been dealing with total fucknuts - who allowed you grasping distance.
Anyone with training is going to drill you before you get closer than 7 meters.
I routinely train with a full sized pistol to triple that and can hit a paper plate every time - even in rapid fire. With my carry gun (a tiny little thing) to 7 meters.
The odds of someone disarming me are pretty slim.

Like I said, they weren’t particularly skilled. One went for a pistol in his waistband while standing next to me at a bar, the other one (whose arm I broke) had his gun almost touching my face. These weren’t professional types, they were the sort of buffoons who expect that the mere sight of a gun is a guarantee of getting people to back down.
But I don’t disagree with your assessment - if I hadn’t been within grappling distance, I likely would have employed different defensive techniques (i.e., run like a rabbit).

Boru Running like a rabbit with it' s ass on fire is a solid, time proven technique - providing your assailant isn' t really intent on plugging you. Hitting a fast moving target with a handgun is difficult, but not impossible.
We used to practice with 22s - trying to hit dragonflies. One in 30 is pretty good. These days the bugs are in decline - so it' s no longer done...
I have also shot skeet with a 22 semi auto rifle on board a Coast Guard ship. It's common using shotguns. The executive officer was impressed that I got a few with a .22 rifle.. Of course after I got a couple - everybody else had to give it a try... Fortunately I had a full brick of ammo. ( 550 rounds).
