When I lived in southern Arizona, we were in a newer development. The construction apparently displaced some tarantulas. I pulled into the area one day and (not intentionally) ran over what must have been the granddaddy of them all. Made quite the crunch under my tires. Ran over a rattlesnake (also not on purpose) on I-10 one evening...turns out they pop when you drive over them. He shouldn't have been on a highway he wasn't paying taxes for.

Saw hundreds of tarantulas out on the grass when I was stationed at San Angelo in 79, I thought it was some kind of migration at the time but it was probably mating season.

We get tarantulas up on our porch sometimes, mostly during heavy rains.

The Biggest Spider we get up here are Dock Spiders they aren't Tarantulas, but they get about the size of a human hand not all that dangerous but having one crawl up your leg wading in the water can be pretty freaky
