Here's another one from CNN. Same problem:

One source says 200 PEOPLE are dead. The other, 232 PALESTINIANS.

Pretty sure boh groups are people...

THANK you. CNN seems to have a vested interest in not referring to Palestinians as 'people'. Only the Israelis seem to deserve that distinction.

Look again at your second excerpt as well:

Quote:More than 700 people have been killed in Israel, and over 400 are dead in Gaza.

Note the use of active and passive verbs. People were killed in Israel, but they only just happened to be dead in Gaza. A subtle but palpable way to bias the reader.

My thought was elision for the sake of brevity-saving ink, in the newsprint past. I didn't see that as dehumanizing, probably because of this, and I recognize Palestinians as people, anyway. Except for those animals who paraded some dead gal with only her panties on around in their truck.
