TX social media censorship bill

What if they just blocked all traffic going to or from Texas-based IP addresses, redirecting to a web page stating that the new law made it too risky to support users in Texas?

RE: TX social media censorship bill
Not everyone in Texas agrees with Abbott or his decisions. In fact, he appears to be trying to do everything he can before someone stops him.

The biggest issue with putting a stop to these recent insanities is that Abbott and cronies are convinced that companies won't leave the state. There are a ton of headquarters of major companies here in North Texas. Abbott is such a jerk that even if/when these companies start to leave Texas, or change their plans to move here, he will remain convinced that Texas doesn't need them.

It's pretty tense around here. At least I have gotten used to never leaving the house.

The threat should be enough. Texas could use a good shit fit.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed a bill that aims to stop social media companies from banning users or nixing posts based solely on political opinions — the latest salvo by Republicans, who claim that these tech giants are censoring conservative users.

"We will always defend the freedom of speech in Texas, which is why I am proud to sign House Bill 20 into law to protect first amendment rights in the Lone Star State," Abbott said in a statement.

So if you have a bakery you have the freedom to object to what is written on your cakes, but if you have a website you are forced to have whatever people write on it.

What they want to do is silence other's dissent, not theirs.

Sure, but when it comes down to it, there's a lot more to it than that, Brian. Social media is the new public square, and plenty of people on the left and LBGT people are being censored as well, so this would help these people as well. I'm against the part where they have to get illegal material off the site within two days though. Social media is the new town square. That's why people should be free to post what they want. The Taliban is being platformed by twitter for God's sake, while scientists and the POTUS are banned. How fucked is that? If a Christian doesn't want to make a sinful cake, go somewhere else. Why do you want to support their business anyhow? A cake shop is not the town square. There is no comparison at all.

Facebook, twitter, google ect have massive influence on US elections. You worry about Russia spending some thousands of dollars on facebook meme ads, when it's really these multi-billion dollar companies that have the biggest influence on elections.

If a baker has the privilege of following his conscience, so do the companies of facebook, twitter, et al. You thinking it would be good if we treated them as a public square does not change them into a public square. Taking the right to run their platform as they choose out of the hands of their shareholders is simply government theft. But I'm not surprised that you would advocate abrogating people's rights so that false claims of censorship from the right can be pacified. That's the same blighted logic as saying that we should audit elections because a bunch of right-wingers have been sold the bill of goods that the election was stolen. Their ignorance and belief in false claims justifies nothing.

Be patient, I think TX Republicans have overplayed their hand by putting their theoretical ideas into actual practice. IMHO, there's going to be a significant backlash in next year's election; tipping TX towards the blue side of purple.

This is just another sign of how far Republicans have gone from actual conservatism.  They're oblivious to the far reaching consequences of this.  I think this could end up in the supreme court.

This doesn't do anything, since legally speaking social media companies are not banning users solely based on political opinions. Unenforceable. Next!

The answer used to be if you don't like it, go to another platform. People tried that, and some of these platforms were no longer allowed to host their websites, people started getting banned from getting donations, banks won't deal with them anymore, etc. They tried it your way, and they were squashed. This is why social media is the new town square and they have a massive influence over society and elections. It is simply election interference on every level. Russia has nothing on Google. Google is God.
