It was long ago for sure, so no, I cannot find a link to the actual story. But despite your best attempts to counter everything I say, it was a real crime story. Just like the robbers I directly witnessed running down the dock as a kid.
If you talk about anything in your past you know is true, should I always think you are making it up?
I've met Pat Benatar, I've met Jay Leno, I shook hands with Bill Clinton. Do I have proof of that? No. But that does not mean I am lying?
I think you really need to relax on always insisting on perfection.
If I claimed I was dating Angelina Jolie, then you'd have real reason to question me.
I don’t think you’re making it up, I don’t think you’re lying, and I don’t doubt it was something you found on the internet. I’m not questioning you or your honesty.
I just don’t think the story is true. Calm down.

An aside, when paying my bills over the phone, often it is standard operating procedure for the employee to end the call with "Is there anything else I can help you with". I love ending those calls with, "Can you get me a date with Angelina Jolie?".
I've gotten the response once, "That is above my pay grade".

Oh and again, no link. But I once saw a story about a guy who went to the police station to report his cocaine had been stolen.

THE Jay Leno? No way.
There was a TV show called America's Dumbest Criminals. My kids watched it. They liked Danny Partridge and hated Tonya Harding. Speaking of dumb criminals.

Your obsession with Ms. Jolie is a little disturbing.

Oh my Thor. I can't say i did anything like that.
And mind you, I am not proud if what I am about to divulge. But long ago as a teen, I lived in a townhouse street, and if anyone knows what that is, it is connected blocks of houses intermittently partitioned by sidewalks, with very narrow back yards and allies. So one night, I had a party in my basement, and back then, even when underage, it was easy to get beer, and there is a lot of truth in the sitcom "That 70s Show". Anyway, we ran out of beer, and one of the guys at my party pointed out down the street, he knew a guy was growing pot in his back yard. So it is the middle of the night, we sneak down the back ally behind the townhouses. One guy, the guy who pointed this out, jumped the back fence, with a flashlight, but the idiot pointed the flashlight into the windows of the house. All of us knew the guy who owned the house was a huge gun nut, so we were freaking out when he shined the flashlight in the windows. Fortunately for us, the owner was dead asleep. The guy plucked out a tall plant, and we took it back to my home. Pro tip, you cannot microwave pot to get it to work like if you use normal methods of processing it.
But, and I don't know if anyone remembers the age before caller ID, or if they remember the old Public Service Announcement "It's 12am, do you know where your kid is?". So after we get back to my basement, one of the guys called the guy we stole the pot from and said, "It is 1:30 in the morning, do you know where your pot is?".
I can say as a teen, I did lots of crap, looking back at it now, that could have gotten me into serious trouble if caught. I am so thankful I outgrew all that bullshit.

Not so much a crime as a prank, but when I was at Queens, some of the engineering students dismantled all the bleachers at the camogie pitch and reassembled them facing away from the field. In one night.
