On the lunacy of prayer

I come from a Catholic tradition, in which prayer is said for higher reasons than just winning a football game. So much higher, in fact, that you could consider Catholic prayer a kind of mystery in its own right, which I do. I prayed my butt off for many years, and eventually got tired of it, but I would like to think my past devotion to prayer is carrying me through life even unto the present day.

This from the guy who says he's not a Christian.  You don't even understand how completely moronic this is.

Quote:I wouldn't say prayer is stupid and selfish, I think it's more the people who pray for stupid/selfish things, who are stupid and selfish.

Prayer as an institution is just a thing.  When I reference "prayer" I'm always referencing it as an action that people undertake.

How much of a Christian can I possibly be if I don't pray or go to church?

They don't call them prayians or churchians, you know.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Yet you now claim that all of your prayers as a Christian somehow built up and protect you.  You need to get your story straight.  What god do you even believe in?

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I was a Catholic, not a Christian. And I'm not a Christian now, since I don't even believe in the God of the Bible.

Well, Catholics most certainly are Christians.  They basically invented the term.

And if you are no longer Catholic, why would you say that past prayers continue to protect you or help you in some way?  Are you saying you were actually praying to some other god back in Catholic school?  If you prayed to Jesus while a Catholic, then you were praying to the Christian god.  If you believe Jesus is not god, but rather some other entity is god (let's call it god X), then you were not praying to god X when you were a Catholic.  So those prayers don't count and could possibly have offended god X.  Jesus would certainly be pissed to hear about you praying to god X, so lets assume god X is also jealous.  Or maybe you were just trying to be funny.

This is the kind of nonsense you consider logical.

Yeah that's just way too convoluted.

Imagine how convoluted prayer fulfilment is.
