If we are going to have an idiot in charge - they might as well be OUR idiot.

We don't need to outsource EVERYTHING.

Let’s take Barack Obama as an example. Imagine that the lunatics got it right and he actually was born in Kenya and his mother wasn’t an American citizen. So, Obama wouldn’t qualify as a ‘natural born citizen’. Let’s further imagine that nothing else about his life was different - same family situation, same education, same work experience. Do you seriously think that would have altered his presidency? Surely the least important thing about someone is where they geographically exited the birth canal.

I wonder if the history of monarchy had anything to do with the NBC clause. Family ties were far more important than anything else and often a distant cousin would be called upon to take the throne of a country he had never even visited. In fact, some called for this very thing when the US was born.
Why is it so?

I think anyone born in America, regardless of skin tone, or family heritage, or religion SHOULD be able run for POTUS and hold office. But it is also equally important to have a leader who won't drive the country off of a cliff. In that context, I'd take a Mandela over the former guy even if he wasn't born here. Nikki Haley for example, her parents were migrants. But she was born here. I wouldn't vote for, because of her religious and economic views, not because of her genes or family history.

I do agree that results are still what ultimately matter, but Hawaii was a state when Obama was born, and not only that, Obama isn't insane like the former guy. I usually don't agree with OLB on much, but consider if it would be possible for say an American to migrate England or Australia and run for and win the office of PM? Not sure of their respective laws for office, but for voters, it would still be hard even if it were legal.

I'd only agree that where someone is popped out at birth geographically does not mean they are going to be good leaders in office. Ted Cruz is another example.

Funny you should mention Australia. Former Australian PM Tony Abbot was born in London. There’s a fair few national leaders in history who weren’t natural born citizens of the countries they led. Golda Meir, Eamon de Valera, Boris Johnson, and so on.

I just think the US rule is antiquated. It doesn’t make sense that you can be foreign born and hold any elective office in the US - from local sheriff to cabinet secretary - except president and Vice President.
