Science Poll!
Please choose the option you feel better describes scientific inquiry:

1) Science is a self-correcting construct through which we discover truths about the universe. Scientific inquiry is rigorously unbiased and self-critical, and is applicable to any area of human endeavor. Our knowledge corresponds to how objective reality is, independent of human existence.

2) Science is a human construct with all the biases and cultural influences that entails, and is inextricably linked to war, politics and business. The knowledge it produces merely imposes order on the chaos of phenomena to make it comprehensible to humans.

RE: Science Poll!
Someone too stupid to know how to set up a poll, and too self-unaware to know the implication of being that stupid, wants a soap box on which to perch his strident self to talk about what that self same stupidity had told him about the overarching implications of flaws in how science may be conducted.

RE: Science Poll!
Why are these philosophical threads categorized under science?

Edit: Thank you for correcting.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Both are fundamentally mistaken positions.

RE: Science Poll!
A case example in how to do bad science.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

RE: Science Poll!
A very good example showing how biases can skew results by limiting the possibilities to absurdities.

Science is a self-correcting human construct designed to minimize the biases and cultural influences with the goal of gaining understanding about the universe. At any given stage, the conclusions are tentative, and supported by the current evidence, but should always be regarded as the best approximation we have at the time. For science to progress, it requires many different perspectives to generate the hypotheses and discipline to test each idea rigorously to see not only when it works, but when it fails. Individual scientists are subject to the biases and influences of the cultures they are in, but because science is a multicultural activity and all ideas need to be tested, those biases tend to be reduced over time.

I'm not really sure if it's what you're getting at, Istvan, but I don't think it's all that helpful to making good judgments about science by looking at it through an existentialist lens.

An existentialist might (perhaps correctly) point out that science is but one facet of human existence, and that human existence itself is more fundamental. Sure. But, to me, I see this more as a prompt to focus on human existence rather than a prompt to produce criticisms of science generally. I think what the existentialist wants to avoid is us gleaning greater truths about the meaningfulness of our existence by simply regurgitating scientific facts. I agree with the existentials a great deal on this. You shouldn't do this.

But if you want to take it further than that, or claim that science is insufficient or flawed in some general way, I don't think that's a good line of criticism to pursue. Just as it may be erroneous for someone to think answers to questions of meaning can come from science, so to is it erroneous to think a good criticism of science can come from the fact that existence is more fundamental to our being.

I agree with #1; I am not sure why anyone would regard it as being mistaken.

Me too.

#1 might be overstated. But that's OP's fault and not science's fault as far as I'm concerned.
