You should get outside your left-wing bubble sometime.  The other side isn't always wrong, and your side isn't always right.

Some people view the power of government, or the freedom from government as situational.  They love government power when it works for them, and hate it when it works against them.  The trick is to find rules that prevent descent into tyranny, while still allowing maximal freedom to do things, and freedom from being harmed by others.

The government isn't good or bad.  It's a tool.  If the tool gets too little or too much power, we can all suffer.  Just because the people who want more or less of it are "right wing nut-jobs" as opposed to "virtuous social warriors" doesn't mean their argument for how the structure of government should work is automatically bad.

Government overreach can certainly lead to all sorts of fucked up things - but the rights abrogation crowd isn't actually concerned about those things.

Amusingly enough, the rights abrogation folks are incredibly left wing....you know, as long as it's for the whites. The organizing propaganda of contemporary white supremacy is explicitly liberal in it's construction. There were no more reich wing assholes to hook, it was a zero sum game. They needed a new set of lines, and they found ones that worked, and worked on a group they didn't have as much purchase into (and even more specifically and fortuitously, for them..with fucking millenials, lol). I've told the story before..but, for some of us, that was it. We walked, at least initially, because white supremacy had assumed the language of left wing victim politics. Transformed from an aspirational ideology, to a scheme to get nanny'd by the state.

I will say, though, that if what we're really conerned about is precedent, and not whether rights actually are being abrogated - that's a really bad way to govern. The assholes will always find a way to do asshole shit with whatever precedent you set. It could be giving out hugs and puppies..and somehow.... Or, if you prefer "we can't govern because the assholes won't let us" is a losers bet, especially in this case.
