Of course Obama would have been able to pick someone to take her place. RBG could have stepped down at any point, but her narcissism clouded her judgement, and of course, we never know for sure when we're going to die, but it ended up being a huge error on her part. I'm not putting all the blame on her for this, but things happen for many reasons, and you can't learn any lessons if you ignore the things that went wrong. Don't let ego get in the way of your values and goals. RBG did that.

The president doesn't just get to pick someone and they automatically become part of SCOTUS.

Appointment Of U.S. Supreme Court Justices

The nomination process for a new Supreme Court justice begins when one either retires from the court or passes away. Thereafter, the sitting U.S. President nominates a qualified replacement. After this occurs, the Senate Judiciary Committee takes over the next part of the appointment process. This committee then vets the nominee's background, history and credentials and holds a first hearing with him or her to question them on their qualifications. The committee then votes on the nominee and the nomination is then sent to the full senate to go forward or with the recommendation that the nominee be rejected. If the nominee is rejected then the president will have to pick a new nominee and the process will start over.

I'm aware of that. You know what I meant. Someone would have been nominated and confirmed if RBG stepped down, and Obama wouldn't have picked someone too of a lefty anyways, because Obama was pretty conservative, so no, you wouldn't have gone multiple years with no supreme court justice being confirmed, and RBG stuck around because of ego. Learn the lesson and hopefully someone in her position makes a better call next time, for the good of the country and for the good of womens'/transmens' rights.

I'm on your side on this, but of course you and Nudge are going to get butthurt even if that is the case. I think this is terrible. Yes, the people against abortion rights should be blamed for this first and foremost, but it's also fair to point out RBG's fuckup, because if you don't even acknowledge what happened or learn from it, you're doomed to repeat those same mistakes.

Hey shithead..

With the death of Antonin Scalia in February 2016 in the beginning of a presidential election year, the Republican majority in the Senate made it their stated policy to refuse to consider any nominee to the Supreme Court, arguing that the next president should be the one to appoint Scalia's replacement.[7] President Obama nominated Merrick Garland for the open Supreme Court seat, but the Senate did not consider the nomination.

Far different situation. Beginning of a Presidential election year vs beginning of Obama's 2nd term, after the election. How are those two situations comparable whatsoever?

They changed their minds when Trump chose a nominee in an election year.

There’s no way RGB leaving the courts before she died would have prevented this. For one thing, she was part of the court’s left wing (such as it is), so even if Obama replaced her with someone else, it wouldn’t have shifted the ideological balance of the court. And on that note that of course they would have let him appoint a replacement, I would like to remind you that for most of the last year of Obama’s second term, the Republican-controlled Senate point-blank refused to even call a vote on ANY Supreme Court nominee Obama may name. Even when he picked the most anodyne centrist possible (one that a Republican senator had considered a good candidate years prior) they refused to budge. And it looks like, by this point, McConnell has all but stated that it’s now his policy that if the Republicans control the Senate, no Democratic President’s nominee will get confirmed.

So what? Again, that's in an election year. With Obama newly re-elected and RBG stepping down, they would not have refused to vote for his nominee for the next 4 years straight. That's not how things go, and you're probably wishing you didn't make that argument, so I'll let it go and pretend you didn't post that.

Again, I just came to the thread to say the ruling sucks, abortion rights are great, and the people that have real power that are on our side of this issue, really need to be careful because slip ups, even with the best of intentions in mind, can be really costly and damaging, and you can always do better when it comes to implementing your goals.

And to Nudge, I'm not biting or letting you sidetrack the thread into a discussion about the alt-right reasons why I support abortion rights or whatever nonsense you're on about. Maybe another time, but this thread is about too serious of a news story for your conspiracy theories, so I'll pass for now.

What sidetrack? You came in and delivered their line. You're late, I'd already read it (and enjoyed a hearty laugh at the premise, too). Womp womp.\

Google notifications are amazing. It's why I always know what you fucking nuts are going to say before you get here.
