Hey guys, I'm new here but I was encouraged by a few members to start my own topic so hopefully this is okay even though I just got here.

For my first topic I would like us to discuss the book of Job as it is one of my favorite books of the Bible. For me personally I have always viewed suffering as a necessary thing that tests and proves our values and convictions. But I also find that the problem of suffering is often the biggest obstacle to faith for many people. It is such a personal thing, how can a loving God allow for an innocent man to suffer? How is it that he could allow for some of the worst things to happen to some of the best people?

So simply put, this thread is dedicated to the problem of suffering in our belief system but to make the topic a little more specific (and interesting) I would also like to get your guys views on the story of Job specifically.

Humans surviving suffering does not mean they have to go out of their way to create suffering. 

I am sorry, but Job is a vile story. If I noticed a parent treating a child the way Job gets treated by God, I would call CPS and the police, and hopefully the child would be removed from the house. If I noticed a dominate spouse treating the other like God treats Job, I'd call the police. If I had a friend who treated me like God treats Job I would get the fuck away from them and never see them again.

Suffering isn't the product of a magic man in the sky allowing or causing or testing. Suffering is simply something life endures or dies from. Otherwise you are thinking of yourself as a lab rat, a toy, a puppet.

They didn't go to heaven, that was c 700 years away from being invented at the time this part of the bible was written.

Our picture of the afterlife in the Old Testament is fairly minimal, however what I do know is that God would ultimately be the one to decide what to do with their souls.

The book of Enoch does shed some light on heaven as well as the afterlife, I'm not sure but I think that before Jesus died on the cross those who were counted as righteous before God got to enter a lower-layer of heaven that acted as a waiting room until Jesus opened the gates for all who would accept him. This is more or less just a theory I have because for the most part our Biblical image of the afterlife is murky at best.

My point is simple though, if we're judging this story through the lense of the religion in which it is based then when God decides to kill a life he helped to create their soul is under his authority. He will decide their final resting place. Also, God is above men, the lesson of Job is not that we should try to be like the God whose ways are far above ours, but instead that we should be like Job and keep our morals and our faith even during times of harsh unjust suffering.

Jesus is our ultimate example of how a man should act here on Earth.
