Why did God give commandments to Jews?

Why did God give commandments to Jews?
Why did God supposedly give laws and commandments to Jews like not to collect wood on Sabbath, to stone a married woman if she is not a virgin, not to eat shellfish, not to wear mixed fabrics, etc.?

I mean what would happen to Jews if they didn't obey the laws? What's in it for them?

In Christianity, it mostly means that you go to an eternal torture chamber when you die if you don't listen to God's commandments, but Jews did not have the afterlife, so I guess God would just destroy them.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Pharisees had belief in afterlife. Sadducees didn't believe in afterlife.

Two ways to look at this, and one interesting way to put them together. What does a person get by following a gods command to rest on some day or not eat a food of questionable health implications? Well..rest and health, but also reputation with the command issuer. Insomuch as you believe that only those the command issuer is satisfied with can/will get rest....they become the same conceptual item.

Strict virginity codes dissuade arguments over paternity which can cause social unrest - particularly in tribal and matrilineal societies - the culture of origin being both. As above, it's not uncommon for people to view social unrest or fraternal violence as a judgement for and proof of unsanctioned or degenerate activity.

The mixed fabrics things was racially coded language. Also as above, indicative of race mixing which was then seen to be the reason that god had abandoned or was becoming thoroughly angry with the chosen people, as they go to some lengths explicitly mentioning in the stories in question. Think "no baggy pants, no ethnic hair styles" rules.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

My understanding is that God would punish his chosen in this life if they transgressed.

Why wouldn't an ethnocentric god have ethnocentric concerns?
