The Absurd GOP
RE: The Absurd GOP
It’s rather telling that, of all the places they’re doing this to, they focus on Martha’s Vineyard, the one with less than 20,000 year-round residents, because I think that if they focused on the larger communities they’ve been shipping people, their larger point about how undesirable immigrants* are wouldn’t hold up at all.

I’ve mentioned before that they’re doing this with Illinois. Abbott has bussed 500 immigrants off to Illinois since August 31. A cursory Google search shows that there’s over 500,000 undocumented immigrants in the state of Illinois. If those immigrants are a problem in themselves, why would adding less than a tenth of a percent to this total be a big deal? Maybe it’s the fact that they’re basically being stranded in Illinois after being lured into the buses with false promises just because Greg Abbott felt like being a racist cock.

* Note: given that many of these “illegal immigrants” are asylum-seekers (an internationally recognized right for decades) and that these days, the process for legal immigration is so labyrinthine that coming to America legally is out of the cards, it’s safe to assume that Abbott and DeSantis aren’t really differentiating between legal and illegal immigration, so I won’t either.

Majority of Republican Voters Want to Make Christianity the Official Religion

Proponents of Christian nationalism have said there should be no barrier between church and state in the U.S., an explicit rebuke of the First Amendment and one of the U.S.’ founding ideals.

A clear majority of Republicans—57 percent—said they don’t believe declaring the U.S. a Christian nation would be constitutional. But when asked whether they favor or oppose declaring the U.S. a Christian nation, an even larger share of Republicans, 61 percent, supported doing so.

Unsurprisingly, nearly 80 percent of Republicans and more than half of Democrats who described themselves as born-again or evangelical Christians supported declaring the U.S. a Christian nation.

The responses also exposed deep generational divides: A majority of Americans born before 1964 who responded to the poll said they support declaring the U.S. a Christian nation, while just a quarter of millenials and 34 percent of Gen Z respondents said the same.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

What's so special about 1964?  Give us the percentages for other cutoff dates.  Don't lump me in with those other fucks.

The middle ages ended in England in 1485 with Henry VII's victory. Of course, no one alive at the time was cognizant of that.

I'd rather be arbitrarily deemed middle age than boomer.

Republican Josh Hawley proclaims there's only 'one gender' in fundraising email (msn.com)

The Republican rush to oppose transgender people has taken a turn in Missouri, where Sen. Josh Hawley ® is up for reelection.

In a fundraising email to his supporters, Hawley asked folks to give to his campaign so he could help stop schools from teaching that there's more than one gender.

Let that sink in a while.  This supposed uber-hetero thinks there's only one gender.

Also Greg Abbott of Texas and Doug Ducey of Arizona. They've also been transporting and stranding migrants under the assumption that they're here illegally, and in higher numbers. Also, I still can't help but notice that, despite the Martha's Vineyard crisis being the one with the fewest people sent, it's the only one notable enough for a Wikipedia page. It's weird, it's almost like it's the only one of the cities they're shipping them to where the right's narrative about undocumented immigrants straining the economy could actually come to pass with those numbers they're sent.

Huh. If there's only one gender, then what's the problem with gay rights?

I suppose we can add ‘gender’ to the list of words Hawley doesn’t understand.
