My objection isn't to taxes or symbolism.  I note that  monarchy can only be as good or as bad as it's monarch.  You don't see me pinning my kids future to the success of the new king charles, eh? Neither are the brits. They have a symbolic monarchy because they understand the historical problems of monarchy. If it was working great it wouldn't be a ceremonial position.

So, think of the dimmest bulb in your family tree...and realize that under a monarchy, that bulb could be expected to be the light of the world. Nothing else is required to explain the failure of monarchy, imo.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. A comparison not only depend on the particular form of the monarchy or republic, it also depend on the political customs and social organization of the society over which it rules, and of the international political, diplomatic, and the commercial/economic environment in which the society find itself

I've wondered this myself.

Honestly, when you look at the stunts Trump has played over the last few years, when you look at the games McConnell is playing with less spectacle but more consequence, when you look at people like the Koch brothers and Elon Musk and the Waltons and oil companies and the power and influence they have over the government, I can't help but wonder if a royal family would allow that?

Some if it, yeah, probably.  Hell, it's not like I would expect royalty having a problem with wealthy families having undue privilege over everyone else since that's exactly what they are: a wealthy family with undue privilege.  But would they eventually have a point where they would draw the line and say "No.  You can't do this."?

yup-and then imagine them as the royal family. It's just always worse, imo.

Europe was plagued by power games between religions and royal households. Both wanted to expand their power. The U.S. rejected both power structures.

Unfortunately, the President has some residual powers of a monarch, and the Christian Dominionists want to undo the separation of church and state.

A limited constitutional monarchy can be better than a full republic, if the royal family is popular and performs its duties well.

A republic has the problem of replacing the historical reverence for a monarchy with a reverence for a constitution. They don't necessarily have the same power over the imagination. In the U.S., many would be happy to redo, undo, or destroy the constitution for short-term gain.

Maybe. Maybe not. Narcissists like Donny are going to be less ridiculous since they already get so much praise. Emphasize to them that their personal value is equivalent to the value of the nation you lead and he might start to care about his country.

But, yeah, chances are, you’d be right. If the king or queen is an obnoxious, boorish twit, you can’t vote them out. That’s the strength of democracy.

People find ways to get rid of kings - that's another problem but nothing that a knife never solved. Even if you take that route, you'll still have to deal with the consequences of the kings actions which lead to such a drastic step - and what are the odds his dipshit sons uday and qusay replace him? Better than zero..I'd imagine, which is much too much.
