Let's see what we can find.

About Three-in-Ten U.S. Adults Are Now Religiously Unaffiliated

You asked for avowed atheists.

1The share of Americans who identify as atheists has increased modestly but significantly in the past decade. Pew Research Center telephone surveys conducted in 2018 and 2019 show that 4% of American adults say they are atheists when asked about their religious identity, up from 2% in 2009. An additional 5% of Americans call themselves agnostics, up from 3% a decade ago.

So everything is fine.  Preachers still have jobs for now.

A generation to two ago atheists were such a minority that Gallup could not even detect them in their polling.

I still have a question about how many 'believers' actually do.

If they do believe, not many live like they do.

If you were a true believer, wouldn't you behave as one?

Speaking as an instrumentation engineer, the "not what it is but what it does" number of atheists would be a truer measure.

I don't think most Christians and atheists believe it's OK to steal, but most have.
