What if Judas didn't do it?
#11
RE: What if Judas didn't do it?
It would be about a months wage for a laborer - but judas was no laborer. Judas was a theif. Crime has a long history of not paying. Thematically, it echoes the frustrations voiced all throughout the ot, that thievery was central to the plight of gods nation, and gods anger. It's pretty well constructed, imo. The pettiness and tragedy of it is supposed to stick out, and it does.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I was basing the figure solely on the silver content of the coins.

And, for the record, crime pays phenomenally well. Always has, always will.

I don't believe SDA theology teaches that Jesus' mission was dependent on Judas' betrayal. I vaguely remember encountering this theme before. If I come across a source I'll link it.

Jesus knew what was motivating Judas, yet failed to reject him as an apostle. That’s a pretty strong indication Jesus believed that Judas was pre-ordained to betray him.

An important variable here is that people already wanted Jesus dead, irrespective of Judas' betrayal. I don't see how removing the betrayal would have affected the crucifixion, other than the timing of it.

Breezy, you need to watch Jesus Christ Superstar.

Besides being a fun movie with some great music...the Judas story is all spelled out.

And King Herod is a scream.

According to the story, the authorities didn’t know what Jesus looked like (hence the literary device of a betrayer). Jesus had to be betrayed to make the myth work. If it hadn’t been Judas, there would have been some other pre-ordained rat.

Jesus can’t even commit suicide without needing a middleman.

Provided that Jesus and Judas actually existed for this to have been a question even worth asking.

Otherwise it would similar to “what if Snow White didn’t like red apples?”

I'm not sure I follow. What is the relationship between the authorities not knowing what he looked like, and Jesus needing to be betrayed to make the myth work?
