I'm the opposite, I can't read stuff from King or Koontz, too long and drawn out. Basically, they're boring, with 'cliche endings.
Just my opinion.

It's all good. I like reading about people, no matter the genre.

King I can do, even though he's the king of purple prose. Although, I've always thought him better at world building than characterization. Koontz, on the other hand, has only written one novel. He just keep changing the title, tweaking minor details and re-releasing it. He is the undisputed heavyweight champ of formulaic writing.

RE: Horror fiction
The most horrific novel I've read was "The Painted Bird" by Jerzy Kosiński. And it is probably as disturbing as novels can get.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I did start reading a series of books about a vampire hunter named Anita Blake (can't remember the author).

The first couple were okay until the books degenerated into her being nailed by just about every male she met.

That was my experience with the Anita Blake books too, it devolved into porn, basically; and not my kind of porn.

As long as I can remember, I've always loved horror movies, stories, monsters, Halloween, and the occult. Anything/everything that is considered dark, forbidden, macabre, heretical, or off limits from "normal" people has interested me, hence the nickname my wife gave me several decades ago.

I've accumulated a small library of horror fiction, the history of Witchcraft, Satanism, and Halloween, along with Norse history since I was in high school(a really long time ago). I've read just about everything written by Poe, HP Lovecraft, Brian Lumley, and Charles L Grant. If I had to pick a favorite, it's probably Lovecraft. I started collecting his stuff when I was in high school and college.

Several books in my collection are over 40 years old. I also have collected a series of books published by DAW titled "the Year's Best Horror Stories" that was published from 1971 until 1994. I've managed to find every book in the series except for volume II, I never did find it.

I've been reading Darcy Coates' stuff lately, I'm finishing my 4th book of hers before I start her Grave Keeper trilogy. I don't ever see myself not reading horror fiction, it's been in my blood for far too long. Anyone else?

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. The paperback is over 700 pages though, so it's a commitment.
