Well, there was that one time when the Pope encouraged people to kill every cat on sight for being familiars of witches and the Black Plague soon followed on the back of gnats on the back of rats, but the audit trail there is sketchy.

Yeah, it is scandalous since Pope Gregory IX did much more scandalous things like started Papal Inquisition, condemned Jews to inferior status, led crusades, ordered the burning of books, and other crimes against humanity to focus on something that he may not have done (killing cats).
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Akhenaten’s monotheistic heresy, the Alcibiades affairs, Sulla’s coup, Caesar’s assassination, Theodosius’ edict of Thessalonica, Venetian sacking of Constantinople, inter caetera issued by pope Alexander VI, the Spanish subjugation of the Inca Empire, those are just the ones in western history before the founding of the United States, that 1000 years hence, might well still be seen as more influential on long term course of world events than the very existence of the United States, much less any scandals within it.
