Watching Young Sheldon, I became confused by him pausing a show on the television. The pause option was available via VHS, but not regular television until 1999. Therefore, although it was not directly mentioned, I am assuming the show was recorded on VHS since he was probably asleep when it originally aired at night. This, and the fact that he was watching it during the day.

Yep, several episodes later the video cassette recorder is finally brought up. In reverse order, because a writer must have recognized the hole where an explanation was previously required.
