I find atheists are very religious people actually, most of the ones that come online to talk shit are very zealous in their unbelief, likely the spawn of the vehement hatred spewn by Richard Dawkins, I was more inclined to Sagan's teachings though, which was to embrace life with a little humility.

What would be the reasons that an atheist would want to be religious, non-theistically?

There are nontheistic religions, or at least religions that don't require theism. I'm a lapsed Unitarian Universalist myself. I got the benefit of spending more time with my partner when I stopped attending.
