You know, even under that scenario, I probably would have done at least an “I’m never eating at this place again.”
When the boss of South Jersey tells you to take off your hat, you take off the hat. Capisce?
Seriously, though, men wearing hats indoors is symptomatic of the decline in good manners.

When they inculcated that in you, did they give any rationale besides “Befehl ist Befehl”?
No more than saying ‘please’ or ‘thank you’, holding a door for someone, or chewing with your mouth closed. Good manners cost nothing.

Saying please and thank you helps the other person feel valued, holding a door for someone is actively helping them, and chewing with your mouth open is unsightly.
What similar rationale even is there for insisting that removing your hat is good manners? The lack of any real connection between manners and bareheadedness (unless the hat itself obstructs the view or expresses values contrary to the norms of whoever is around you) is the problem here. I wouldn’t be shouting out the Nuremberg defense if there was as straight a line there as in the other cases.

Removing you hat in a private space is meant as a show of respect. There are other, more practical reasons which don’t really apply any more.
When a hatted man removes their hat in my home, I feel valued. When a hatted man removes their hat in my home, they’re actively helping me by saving me the trouble of either telling them that they’re an ill-mannered clod or physically throwing them out. I find hat-wearing in my home to be unsightly.

Two out of those three would not be welcome in my home.
