This planet has survived much worse than we'll ever throw at it and bounced back every time.
We are in danger of wiping ourselves out( along with a signifigant fraction of the biosphere)
But as far as life is concerned that's OK.
Life and Earth will generate new species to fill the niches that have been vacated and we will just be another thin layer in the geologic column.
And no-one will remember who jesus or god was.

Correction 'JohnDG' ... Humans and human civilisation is doomed. Extinction may be a few millenia from now imho but I do not think that the planet is in any danger.
Except for the fact were are the only species to ever clear entire country sized portion's of forest, first to suck and mine earth hollow from the inside out, first to over fish, over hunt, over farm, over pollute and first to completely make land uninhabitable. Now I believe you know their have been other simular natural disasters, extintions, population drop's and climatic changes. But never has anything of the same scale of what were doing right now ever happend before. Assuming with our extinction, the entire world isn't uninhabitable, I don't believe it will possibly for life to ever reach the same level as us again. I don't think the earth can repair it's self fast enough, possibly with billions of year's a monkey's level of intelligence will appear but it will appear too late. Because in a couple billion years our sun will super nova, not to mention every year that goe's by our planet get's closer to the sun, so it will be far warmer possibly even venus warm, if not absorbed into a red giant or blown away by super nova.
Live every day as if already dead, that way you're not disappointed when you are.

Nice little guilt trip you got going there johnDG. Whole continents have been denuded long before 'mankind' came along - the KT event comes to mind. Yes a billion years honey ...think aboot it. Earth will not escape the fate of it's parent Star...solar flares will wipe it out long before it goes nova. We are just an ugly green smear on the geological column.
So when did you realise that you have this latent 'doomsday' xtianity in you?? Let it go mate...the Earth is doing just fine...could do with a LOT less pollution YES!!! But other than that she is doing fine. We on the other hand .... haven't gotten out of the trees yet...accept for Sae...maybe?

The point is if we leave the earth reletively in the same state we inherited it, life wouldnt need to repair it's self over such a long time. It would be millions of years instead of possibly a billion, we can very well ensure that if we do become extinct, there would be another chance for an intelligent civilization to come about.
Live every day as if already dead, that way you're not disappointed when you are.

No johnDG that is not how it works. It has BEEN millions of years to get to this point...KT event to now. You are wasting time with your xtian beliefs. You can NOT hold onto anything...the world will NOT stay 'as we found it' because 'as we found it' had been modified from the original....and this hearkens to the 'Creationist mind set'
The only thing I am sure of is that the planet will go on with or with out humans... it is up to us if we want to be a part of that future.

Generally speaking, we all get our information via one news outlet or another, thats what they do, report the news. You know, whats happening in the World. But thats ok, just stick your head in the sand and it will all be ok.
The UN can see the problem, but hey, its a conspiracy, we couldn't possibly be fucking the Worlds boisphere.
