I don't feel like I'm being attacked at all. I already understand that I am an anachronism and that the world is changing in ways I may not like and can't at any rate control. That doesn't mean my opinion is uninformed, resentful, angry, or any other imputation you, Paul, or anyone else would like to make. If you'd like to know my feelings just ask. I'm a pretty straightforward guy. And unlike some folks, I don't take disagreement personally unless and until someone makes it so.

Some of my original music is on Soundcloud under my screenname. I've never made a living off of my music, though I have made supplemental income with it, gigging and doing the occasional recording session. You'll hear why if you listen to my soundcloud; I am a shitty vocalist, and my songwriting doesn't check the top-40 boxes, for the most part. What talent I have I direct to performing my own tastes, and that means it's not shared by many. I don't mind. I love making music, and get a thrill when a song turns out more or less the way I envisioned it.

Do you know where Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier landed on the top 100?

Pretty sure Billboard wasn't publishing in the 17th century.

I think different people define their personal success in different ways. I respect anyone who makes a living making music because it's a "cruel and shallow money-trench" etc etc (lord knows I've banged my head against club walls and the bar owner bent us over and fucked us) and it takes a lot to turn over income in the industry; I certainly won't slag them. That doesn't mean I like their music, necessarily -- or dislike it automatically.

But The top 100 is available now!

Between itsy bitsy and bach’s well-tempered Clavier where in your opinion would they rank today?

Could ai make either or both a top 100 today?

I think it's more about public taste than AI, and I think "Bikini" is the obvious, because classical instrumental music requires time and thinking, both commodities people seem reticent to expend.

I played pubs for almost 15 years and was only stabbed once. I consider that a personal success. Smile

And I’ll bet that most average music listeners aren’t thinking wow your guitar playing stands out.

There's an unfortunate trend in art galleries these days, where they encourage the artist to write an "artist's statement" to put in their public announcements.

More often than not, the artist writes something really high-flown, like "My art is about those liminal moments when the mind passes into the space between the mundane world of the everyday and the deep transcendence which lies behind the world of appearances." (I'm paraphrasing one I saw recently.)

And then you go to the gallery, and you see that this transcendent work is... a painting of a tree.

And it's a perfectly nice painting of a tree. (Though it's something that AI could get pretty close to on a computer screen.) And I think it's lovely that someone would spend her time paying close attention to a tree.

I think it's pretty typical that an artist or musician can get into a "flow state" or enjoyable condition of focussing the mind, which he or she feels strongly. It's very enjoyable. But it's not something which usually gets passed on to the viewer or listener.

RE: Ai music
I would be interested to AI music performed live.

Maybe a live double album to get people excited.

I can see it now - tens of thousands of AI fans waving their glow-sticks and chanting, ‘Mon-i-TOR! Mon-i-TOR!’ and crowding the merch tables after the show to get their overpriced monitor coffee mugs, monitor t-shirts, monitor Day-Glo posters…
