A denial of a thing states it is not so.

Therefore making a statement that a thing is not.

It's the difference between "There is no god." and "I see no reason for there to be a god."

The first is a belief. The second is skepticism.

There being, I think, a rather marked distinction between "I believe that there is no god" and "There is no god." Weak vs strong atheism. Atheism is not a belief system.

Atheism is a denial of god's existence, by definition and etymology. A denial of something's existence equates to belief that it does not exist. For example, I believe that there are no gods. I am an atheist. It seems that people often have a problem with remembering that the word 'belief' does not mean 'knowledge of'.
