It's not just Muslims though. I know a few Catholics who become paralysed with fear when they see a nun, having flashbacks to some very unpleasant school-days.

Thanks for fielding that one Rayaan. So, long story short, a husband CAN strike his wife, but he doesn't have to, and he shouldn't. That about it?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Rayaan, I appreciate your response by the way, and I think it's brave to stick to your guns even when the outcome may be unpalatable to the audience. You don't squirm or flinch. Your christian counterparts on the other hand are as hard to nail down as jello. I personally think that even though the verse may be uncomfortable to Americans, its a far cry from the cartoonish idea of Islam that many in the western world hold.

You got it. Smile

Then again, as Min remarked in his post earlier, you can dismiss all my arguments by simply saying that the Quran was ... written by ... MEN. *facepalm*

That form of 'teaching' is not restricted to Islam.

It was common in a public schools here until the early 1950's.At that time the law was changed so that only a principal could administer corporal punishment. Corporal punishment in public schools was not outlawed here completely until the early 1970's. My perception has always been that a competent teacher does not need to use corporal punishment.

What passed for Catholic education when I was at school took another 20 years to catch up with the public schools. The video reminded me of my school. The strap was THE preferred teaching aide for the full seven years I was at that place. It was rare that an entire week would pass without being belted for most kids..

To this day I loathe those sadistic arseholes. However, my loathing of Catholicism is because I think it is an evil and corrupt institution, which has caused far more human misery than good.

The man is told to advice first, meaning rationally discuss, and if this doesn't work, he can detach himself emotionally and physically (i.e. the last two options). Hence the "striking" is mentioned, which is there only as a permission, but he doesn't have to strike her. Discussing with her is the most important because it is mentioned before anything else.

To many of the macho and arrogant Arabs it was unheard of to discuss with their wives. They viewed them as inferior and trying to engage in a discussion would be a psychological blow to their ego, yet they are being commanded to do so in the Quran. If a husband tries to use this verse to mistreat his wife, then he is committing a sin and abusing his position as a husband in every measure, and he will find no support from the text or from the force of law, as the same verse (4:34) says that he is the guardian and protector, not an enforcer of his own desires.
I don't think you can get away from this. There is specific instruction there that a valid last resort is physical violence - where physical violence is abhorrent.

There is no disclaimer of changeable secular morals (although that is clearly what it is), this is direct from Allah.

Kinda of hard to argue everything from the Qu'ran is holy Allah's word and then rectify casual brutality.

If Allah was so perfect in describing his holy words, wouldn't he be a bit more explicit in clarifying when you can beat up on someone weaker than yourself?
