Atheist Marriage?

RE: Atheist Marriage?
As Sciwoman said, we got married in Lone Elk Park. "Nature's Cathedral" was my thought when I saw that spot the first time. Find a beautiful spot, one without torture devices hanging on the wall.

Surely there couldn't be such a place?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

We are currently in the beginning stages of planning a secular wedding. I have heard that there are humanist officiants, but if there are none in your area, I have also heard that many atheists use UU ministers and just discuss what should be said during the ceremony.

These are two short resources for secular weddings that I have bookmarked. There are some great secular vows that could be tweaked for personal preference.

To OP:

Is your mom a little thick?
(thick: American euphemism for a slightly mentally slower individual. A bit of a half-wit, but not technically diagnosed mentally disabled)

I only ask, because I know TONS of people who have spent massive amounts of money on big weddings held nowhere near a church.

I myself got married on the beach at Lake Michigan (the ocean of the midwest), 200 people, catering, rentals, limos, dress, tuxes, the whole damn thing. And when all was said and done it cost me nearly $12,000.

Your mom could be in for a real rude awakening. Cool Shades

Final thought: I advise not going into debt just to get married. I know a couple who got divorced 2 years later and were still paying for their wedding a year after their separation. Stupid!!

Then out of the blue she said, "Well, at least one good thing has come out of all this. You won't have a white wedding in a church with all the bells and whistles attached - it'll save me money." I didn't know how to respond. I mean, I've thought about it before, but you can still have a wedding when you're an Atheist, right? I'm sure some people just get married at their local city hall. Non-religious weddings do exist, no? All I replied to her was "I suppose," because, Yes, obviously, I won't be getting married in a church. But I was wondering what everyone else thought of the topic, whether anyone on here who is married and not religious can tell me what they did for their cermony.
Thoughts?

Me and my wife (who is also an atheist) went out and rented a party hall. It had a decent sized dance floor and stage. We had the ceremony and party right there, and told people that they can dress up or show up casual. We had no mention of God, and the ceremony was very brief. I then rolled out the keg and the party began. I was probably the best dressed out of everyone who showed up, and I was merely wearing shirt tie and slacks. My wife just wore a sun dress with a traditional flower laurel on her head. I see no problem with an atheist getting married in a church. If you like that sort of thing then have at it.
