Yeah I spent a few hours going down the rabbit hole on that one for fear that something new had cropped up since I last looked. On the other hand....if somebody has anything...

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

What I find laughable about the JREF is that even if someone did find supernatual evidence and explained the phenomenon. it would then be natual and they still couldn't claim the money. I'm not talking about active "super powers" one can turn on or off. I'm talking about something that collects memories and input when the brain isn't functioning.

Your objection has been noted. They do not, however, have to explain the effect to collect their winnings. Case in point, this objection is actually noted and dealt with in the docementation. For a thing to be "supernatural" for the purposes of the challenge, it need only be beyond the experience or area of our current scientific understanding. One could indeed collect their winnings due to a scientific breakthrough encouraged by this very challenge.
So...yeeeeer outta here!
By the way, it should be easy to find proof of "something that collects memories....while the brain isn't functioning"
Lets just cut off someones head, read a few passages from a book, and then ask the head to remember what was read. Collecting and storing memories from inputs ARE functions of the brain. If the brain is not functioning, it's not collecting memories or inputs. That some sort of "self" could exist independently of the brain would be interesting indeed given the curious tendency for one's "self" to cease existing when the brain ceases to function. Don't let my objections discourage you from designing a test for your proposition, of course. I could always be wrong, it's happened before.

Rythm I've cited several studies and cases here on this site of induced brain death and patients having knowledge of things they have no prime sensory access to. This always ends in but ... but... but... that wasn't scientific enough (despite it being peer reviewed and published) or there is bound to be a statistical anomaly that allows for a margin of error. Frankly, tons of atheists I've met claim that the brain is the mind, when it's turned off that's it. There then shouldn't be any way (such an absolutist statement) any extra sensory knowledge should ever be exhibited. I'd love to reengage this topic a third time, but frankly I'm very tired tonight. Maybe some other time and thread.
