Because the religious pay so much attention to us.

It's pretty difficult - by definition of being atheistic - to ignore religion. We see them regurgitating these batshit mental ideas about atheists being "immoral" or "god haters", Then when we correct them, they start waving their arms about and cursing the blasphemous abominations that are the non-believers. This is basically on a par with poking a sleeping lion with a stick, then moaning when it tries to eat you. If they didn't scoff at atheism, there would be no necessity to demonstrably prove their pseudo-moralistic, illogical, inherited, idealistic and fantastical perception of reality to be as hopelessly devoid of truth as the mindless babblings of a homeopathic apothecary moonlighting as a professional astrologer. That's probably why.

Why? Because religion infects every aspect of public life from politics to education and pop culture. Since those things are public, they can and do have an affect on those who don't have the same sect, have a different sect, or have no religion at all.
I think it is perfectly natural to challenge such claims and discuss them and debate them. If our species never questioned social norms our species never would have left the caves.

Religion has an overwhelming influence over the world, evidence would indicate that influence is mostly negative.

When you're up to your arse in alligators it's hard not to mention then occasionally.
If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.

People hate what they don't understand is the main reason. For others, it is a lifetime of indoctrination and servitude. And for a few others, it is abuse by someone they saw as a religious authority figure.
However, from what I have seen from most atheists, it is about a fear of the unknown. They may not always label it as fear, but it is still fear. They focus on their fear in a way to remove it from their sight. I know most on this site would not like this explanation at all, but it is what it is....we're all still human after-all and such fear is a human trait not unique to the close-minded religious folk we often pin it on (Salem Witch Trials, Inquisition, Crusades*, etc.)
*Crusades were more about corruption, but there must have been those who feared the Moslems as well.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

LOL! That is the best transference of religion I've seen today. Religion's only raison d'etre is fear.

People are scrambling about for an identity and grouping in this post-modern age of ours, it's the huamn condition to do so. Atheism offers one as much as theism. Of course, there are a lot of atheists (and Christians) who don't consider their belief or lack thereof in God to be an essential part of their identity, but you don't generally find them on sites like this.
Sadly, it is also a part of identity and social grouping to define yourself against something, hence to mutual fear and antagonism between religious folks and atheist folks. (At least on the interwebs... )
I'd also like to point out the extreme irony of the term "freethinker" becoming ossified though the importance of it to mant people as a label for group identity into a merely a term for someone who doesn't believe in God and adheres to a rather reductionist and out of date form of logical positivism rather than someone who actually keeps a open mind.

I am so glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read this. LOL
And I love their feigned indignity when you pull back the curtain. If I ever write a book, do you mind if I use that?
