My social studies teacher figured out I was atheist, and said "You didn't turn it in" every time I turned in a class assignment. You should be fine?
Religion is like a Penis, you shouldn't whip it out in public and you shouldn't shove it down your child's throat.

You'd like to think you could potentially make a connection, even find a mentor. Unless you think this person brings more intangibles -expertise, reputation, connections- than the alternative, ditch him and don't look back. How to do that - I have no idea.
Well have has a lot of experience and I think I'd seem like a troublemaker changing supervisor preemptively when there hasn't yet been an actual problem.

In my heyday that would have gotten said social studies teacher a squirt of liquid steel in his or her car door locks. Of course, there were a lot fewer remote entry systems back then.

If you are a divinity student, I'd say it's going to be pretty tough to avoid.
Hmmm, interesting concept. One might wish all divinity students to be atheists.
However, a "serious christain" is still not necessarily a bible fundamentalist. But if he is, then it would be nice for you to findout early whether his christianity would make a mockery of your PhD even if you somehow the degree by bending over backwards to baby his sensibilities.

Not valid. Being African is not a sin.

Why not just say 'I'm an atheist' if it comes up? If things deteriorate from there, I'm sure the university has a complaints procedure. You can't judge him on your projection of what could happen, because you don't know.

I agree, I just worry about things before they happen. And sometimes they don't happen, but I still worry anyway.

I have to agree with you here. The fact that this man is a Christian doesn't mean he won't do his job properly as he is supposed to. The fact he posted biblical quotes in his signature before was unfortunate, but it could very well be he just didn't see the harm in them and stopped when he was approached about it. We have no valid reason to assume your supervisor is going to make it difficult for you. If he does, and it turns out that it is due to your non-belief then there has to be a complaint system available in your uni.

I agree with you, but I don't think the way fr0d0 put it makes any sense.
