Theist Ph.D. Supervisor

My social studies teacher figured out I was atheist, and said "You didn't turn it in" every time I turned in a class assignment. You should be fine?

In my heyday that would have gotten said social studies teacher a squirt of liquid steel in his or her car door locks. Of course, there were a lot fewer remote entry systems back then.

Substitute Christian for African.
Why not just say 'I'm an atheist' if it comes up? If things deteriorate from there, I'm sure the university has a complaints procedure. You can't judge him on your projection of what could happen, because you don't know.

We have no valid reason to assume your supervisor is going to make it difficult for you. If he does, and it turns out that it is due to your non-belief then there has to be a complaint system available in your uni.
