help with death please
September 8, 2011 at 9:33 pm
Hello.
I am a young atheist struggling to deal with death.
Ive heard a number of sayings recentely and wish to know if they are true.
Since we do not experience death, death does not exist to us, from an experience standpoint, we are immortal.
Time after death does not exist. John Smith died at 1am,after his death not a single second passes for him, he is consumed in his own timeline.
would anyone say because time doesnt exist outside of life, we are consumed within our own timelines of existance in terms of experience
Thankyou.

It would be more appropriate to say that time doesn't exist for the dead. How would you experience it's passage? The rest of us living folks are of course still plugging along. The conceptual abstraction of time does not exist outside of our own minds (in the strictest sense) , however that which it describes is independent of our existence.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I'm not following the question.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

we exist from a to b. because at b, time stops existing, from an experience point of view we are still consumed from a to b. because death is nothing in terms of experience, it cant end our perception that we still existed from a to b
death is nothing in terms of experience, so nothing cant erase something, so in terms of experience we are consumed in our timeline of life

There's no reason to assume we experience anything after death. Many reasons in fact to assume that we do not. This includes experiencing our lives from a-b. Perhaps you'll have some seemingly eternal flashback of your life, no clue, just before the moment of your death. Not really sure what you're trying to describe.

I suppose you could interpret it that way if it helped. I don't that I'd hang my hat on it, personally. Sounds like a long winded way to say "We don't know that we're dead". lol.
