Dear Tennessee,

Fuck you.

Thank You for Your Time,
Random Internet Stranger.

(Also, go go gadget ACLU! Thank you for being among the only sane people in that state).
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925

Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan

In this thread; Bigotry.

Yes there are bigots in the southern US. Here you’ll find racism, homophobia and religious intolerance. But I’ve got news for you good folks. You’re going to find these things everywhere. Racism is just as prevalent in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Paris, Ankara, Moscow, Jaipur, Djibouti, Beijing and Canberra as it is in rural Tennessee. Believe it or not GLBT communities are thriving in Tennessee. Check out the Cooper-Young district in Memphis, Nashville Pride or even the Metropolitan Community Church in Knoxville if you’re having a hard time believing that.

So come on people. Let’s try to practice what we preach around here. Bring attention to hate and intolerance where you find it, but please let’s try to avoid condemning six and half million people for the actions of a small portion of them.
Save a life. Adopt a greyhound.

RE: Exactly Why Not TN
so now you understand what i'm dealing with...

hey. i am not going to defend the miserable fuckwads that inhabit tn, but i was born and raised here. i'm no geeenyus, but I somehow made it to adulthood as a compassionate, tolerant, rational atheist. Not ALL TN people are rubbish, obviously.

I have mostly nothing to do with these tools. I don't know, I just live here.

While the people here mostly suck, the scenery is beautiful... especially in autumn.
ADDENDUM:

Tim Blankenship, mentioned in the video as the assistant director of Monroe Co. Schools, is my cousin's father in law. He stood up just before their vows at their wedding and patted her on the head while making the announcement that even though she had a "speckledy past", he was okay with all this because she had put Catholicism behind her and had been saved in the baptist church. This was not only unnecessary, but highly disrespectful to Kristin, and my grandparents who sat just feet away. After the ceremony, Kristin came to us in tears apologizing for the whole scene.

I was humiliated for her.

RE: Exactly Why Not TN
I really wish that things like this wouldn't happen.

It's weird, though, I live in VA, I once lived in the country and had to take about an hour and a half bus ride to just get to my high school. There were a lot of lesbians in my high school and not much people had a problem with it, and it was looked at as being cool for the most part. Yet everywhere else, I found that there was a lot of bigotry.

The thing that was really weird was that gay males were mostly looked down on
.

The point of this story is, people are weird and so are double standards.
