I play guitar. The ones I can find in my room right now are an Art and Lutherie AMi, an SG copy with a Bigsby that I built last summer with my Dad, and a Line 6 Variax (old model).

sorry, that's just stupid. I get paid anywhere from $150 to $300 a night and average about 4/5 shows per month. Oh and I always get a bar tab included - so I'm not paying for any of my drinks out of my take anyway. Clearly the local musicians around there have set the standard "pay rate" themselves and it's their own damn fault. If musicians refused to play for just beers, the bars would be forced to either pay you people or turn on a radio.

Maybe you should go around mafia style and get these local musicians to "rethink" their acceptable compensation standard.

If people are happy with it, fair enough I guess. But I'm with you Cin - I'm providing a service, the same as a chef, or a barman. I do the work, I get paid. The fact that I love doing it is besides the point. I mean sure I play a handful of charity gigs a year, but I'm also hoping to get future business out of doing so.
