The Welfare thread (calling on Mehmet here)
#21
RE: The Welfare thread (calling on Mehmet here)
The situation in Van, however is not as good as I'd expect it to be.
Shell B is correct: Turkey isn't really that shitty, but some parts of it are. Like Van. It's far far in the eastern parts of Turkey, and constantly plagued by terrorism and the such.
Infastructure is quite poor, and buildings are built in such a way with no one caring about if it'll last for more than 10 seconds in an earthquake. Seemingly, it doesn't. The government tries to regulate it, however bribes and the likes go a far way in far away places such as Van.
Or death threats. It's really no surprise that no one wants to go to those provinces. There are places in Turkey where you can live in good standards, but there are places which I call, "trans-middle east". Van is one of them.

I thought it might be a fair thread to maintain, through which we can all express care for those on the board.

So, Mehmet, are you safe and sound? Are your family and friends OK?
I am A-OK. And all my relatives are OK too. The earthquake happened far from where I'm living.
It was in the city of Van.

The thing is that we DON"T know where you are living (City that is) We had to go through this with the Christchurch earth quake only to find one of the members actually LIVED in the quake zone; so we still get a bit worried when ever a new earth quake hits a city.
I live in Ankara mate. Our capital.
And no need to be concerned, I live far away from any earthquake zone in Turkey.

Sorry about that (still in that painful haze of post painting of the house)...Ankara. I have a memory of that city..(armchair traveller here atm) Please post No need for actual suburbs address etc just the City where you live. For me Australia has cities that seem to be smeared over a large portion of the landscape.

Same here but I do make it a policy of never putting my mobile # or address online...or any other identifying details either... it's fair I think

Thanks.
To the people, well, they are still unfortunate even if they survived, since looters have sprang up everywhere now.

Natural disasters bring out the worst in some people, no matter where you happen to be.

Fortunately, they also bring out the best in many.
