Xtian Bible "Prophecy" Demolished

RE: Xtian Bible "Prophecy" Demolished
Of course they would. How else can you ignore the clear meaning of the words and pretend that they say something completely different?

It is in the interest of theistic morons to over-complicate this shit to the point that the dolts just say "yes, father....whatever you say."

Nonetheless, at this point it appears that none of them even has the guts to do that. They have declined to pick up the gauntlet leaving their fucking bible broken and defeated in the field.

I try and follow threads min. sorry no one has gotten to this. Because it's you (and because I have nothing better to do ATM), I will at least dignify you with a response. I don't consider Micah 5 anything more than a prophesy on the davidic lineage of the Messiah. I'm not aware of any Messianic Jewish prophesies or Jewish interpretations of the Torah or Talmud that pinpoint the birthplace of the Messiah by name.

Besides, it's already been done.

The Bible Unearthed - I believe in 4 parts.

The book is better but this isn't bad.
"The Bible Unearthed" by Finkelstein and Silverman

"Who Were The Early Israelites and Where Did They Come From" by William Dever

"Did God Have A Wife" by Dever

"The Quest for the Historical Israel" by Finkelstein and Amihai Mazar

"The View From Nebo" by Amy Dockser Marcus

These are all archaeological books but written for laymen. Real archaeological papers are cures for insomnia to all but other archaeologists.
One reason that fundies prefer their fairy tales is because they are too fucking stupid to understand anything more complex.

Start with "The Bible Unearthed," Zip.

Thanks min. I appreciate this.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise

Honestly Zip you hit on a big problem with archaeology. Scholarly works are written for each other - and this is true of many fields - not the general public. That's why a guy like Neil de Grasse Tyson is so valuable to science. He has a way of explaining things in such a way that smarter-than-average laymen ( obviously not fundies, they're hopeless ) can grasp.

"The Bible Unearthed" compiles 30 years of archaeological work which Finkelstein and his colleague Neil Silberman have explained in such a way that the dirty little secret of Syro-Palestinian archaeology escaped from the realm of pottery shards and stratigraphy. The scholars knew where the evidence was going in the 70's but it didn't start to scare the shit out of the religious community until 1999 when this was published in Haaretz by Ze'ev Herzog.

Quote:The archaeological findings blatantly contradict the biblical picture: the Canaanite cities were not "great," were not fortified and did not have "sky-high walls." The heroism of the conquerors, the few versus the many and the assistance of the God who fought for his people are a theological reconstruction lacking any factual basis.

The fundies shit their pants.

William Dever was once quoted as saying that " I began writing to oppose the Minimalists and ended up becoming one of them." The evidence is overwhelming to anyone who puts the bible down long enough to read it. The Bible Unearthed was probably the one book which had the biggest impact on me. Prior to that I always assumed that there was some genuine history contained in the OT, if not the hocus-pocus shit. Frankly, whatever historical accuracy it may have seems to be an accident.

That puts you a bit outside the mainstream of fundie "thought," tacky.

I knew there was a reason I liked you.

I thought it was willingness to take a beating? Perhaps you like my chin stubble? Regardless, I worship in a messianic temple, I love getting the Rabbi's teaching on some of the historicity on some of the verses from a jewish perspective. I think Christianity could use a bit of judaism at least in it's classrooms. After all Jesus was a jew and aside from what the non-paulines think most of the apostles were as well. I think you get more fundies the further south you get. Seems like the people in my city aren't opposed to new ideas or critical thought, as long as they have plenty of nap time during service Big Grin

Min, what other historical/archaeological books besides The Bible Unearthed would you recommend for the layperson? I would like to not only read some new material, but I would also like some good references to use in my "anti-babble" paper.
